“Saving Mr Banks” – Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks were both excellent in the film and it was a well-told, emotional story about the woman who wrote Mary Poppins [the novels] . Borrowed it from the library.
At the same time I also borrowed “Diana” – the Naomi Watts film from last year. It kept stopping and sticking and I only got about 30 mins into it, but it wasn’t good. She looked nothing like Princess Diana, for a start!

I want to see that.

The problem with making such a film is that no one can adequately ‘look’ like the people they are supposed to represent, especially when their faces have been and continue to be seen regularly. It is still too soon, give it a noter 30-50 years and then it might ‘feel’ better.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was good fun as well.

Hated the first twenty minutes or so but after that the film gripped me. I knew Nikki had had a bad crash and I knew James had won the world championships once, but as for what went on around them and between them I knew nothing. It did not paint either of them in a particularly good light but despite their animosity beneath it all there was a respect for their abilities, which has been a bit lacking with some drivers of late.

The last film I saw was on television: “Bertie and Elizabeth”. About George VI and Queen Elizabeth. I watched it because James Wilby played George VI and I’m rather partial to him! It was a pretty good film.

August 3, 2015 at 10:17 pm #89290Re: What was the last good film you watched?Loved Rush. I like the way Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard will always be Richie to me) shot it, grainy to add to that retro look.
Watched Gone Girl last night. Been waiting a while to see it. Hated it. Did not sympathise with either of the main protagonists & so did not care for their outcome, which was equally unfulfilling.
Big Hero 6 was an emotional roller coaster I thought for an adult, never mind a child. There must of been some upset kids watching that. Great film though, none the less.
Fury was utterly compelling but, very downbeat. It does not glorify war at all. If anything it captures the futility of it, much like Saving Private Ryan & Brad Pitt (like Tom Hanks) to me is always watchable. Sounds fantastic going through the surround sound. My neighbours must of thought we was under attack !
I really want to see Inside Out, The Minion Movie, The Theory Of Everything & Spy. The clips I’ve seen of Spy with Melissa McCarthy look really funny & then there’s Jason Statham & Jude Law sending themselves up as well as any spy franchise you care to think of.

Not sure if I’ve mentioned this previously but, if you haven’t read the book “The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared” by Jonas Jonasson then please, do yourselves a favour & seek out the film. It’s a foreign language film & a little violent at times but, totally brilliant from start to finish.
I’ve got the blu ray & the book & obviously the books better but, the film does it some justice too.
The people behind the Horrible Histories also do a show on Sky1 called “Yonderland” & it’s very funny, if you like Horrible Histories.
And finally, one of our Nieces, Olivia, came for a sleepover in May & she brought with her a box set called “Diary Of A Whimpy Kid”. I had my doubts but, we watched the first two films & thought they were great fun, for kids & kids like me .
PS Sorry, I forgot Boyhood. Different. Shot almost like a documentary, it wasn’t entirely scripted as it charts the life of one boy in real time over ten years I’d guess. I liked it although watching it once was enough, Kristel less so.

We watched the last ever CSI, a feature length special. Afterwards I realised why we stopped watching it years ago. Such a cliched ending.
Just found out the second season of The Blacklist is available as a box set on Sky so we’re going to settle in for the next few days whilst the weathers crap & get through that. In case you haven’t seen it, James Spader plays a rather charismatic, articulate & callous is he/isn’t he villain, Reddington. It wouldn’t work at all if it was anybody else I feel, he’s made the character his own & I love it.
There are a couple of dodgy episodes in the first season but, bear in mind there’s 24 episodes, that’s not bad at all for an American show. I tend to lose interest quickly as they churn out so many & after a while they all fade to the same formula.
Do seek it out – The Blacklist.
