    The Appy Corner…..

I have previously posted that the Apple family of gadgets are “Hideously Overpriced”. I now believe
that they are worth every penny due solely to the “App”, which is a third party software application or
“add on” that adds new functions and capabilities.

There is a veritable flood these new high quality Apps that enhance and enable the lives of
disabled people. Aided by progressive free software updates from Apple (latest IOS 5) this
is a quantum leap and keeps us all at the cutting edge of technology.

I apologise to those of you who do not have iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch. I hope a few might give
it a try and benefit from the new touchscreen and voice controlled world that beckons.

    Re: The App Corner…..

Just found today an App called “Tunein Radio”.

    Price : Free

Immediate Access to thousands of Radio Stations all around the world.

Includes every radio station I have ever heard of and they are all in perfect quality. The
things has already learnt what music I like and is now suggesting other stations
and programmes I will like. It works! One press of the screen and I was off to an
R & B station in San Francisco, then to Brazil, then to easy listening in Turkey.

    Excellent.

You get Apps from the iTunes stores or just simply download them simply
from the touchscreen on the iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad.

Sarah as always is ahead of the game.

I was going to post tomorrow that “Soundhog” that they have given us for free
this week is an even better version of “Shazam”.

It also recognnizes tunes that you hum or sing into it and even find the lyrics
    for any song it finds.

Where have you guys been for the last few years lol :-p . Glad you’re finally discovering Apps :-). I have hundreds – slightly obsessed. Some good health ones to store medical records. I’m photographing all my medical notes and keeping them to hand in an App called My Medical. I keep a vent diary and food diary to reflect on health trends. Will get the name if anyone is interested. I’m writing this on my phone as we speak!

Heart Rate is nifty where you put your finger over the lens of your phone and the light from the flash becomes a sensor. Picks up heart rate and yesterday saw per ventricular contractions on its graph! No substitute for proper medical instruments but interesting.

Apps to the right of us, Apps to the left of us, Apps all around us…….

……and with Apple updating the IOS software and the Apps themselves being continually
improved it just gets better and better.

Tried the heartbeat one a few months ago but gave it up as a dead loss…..now it
    has all come round.

Glad Donna Louise got there before I did.

Yes I need the name of the medical one please ?

Health Apps I have tried and found useful:

    Colorcal +
    http://www.enatal.com/colorCal/

You create a topic such as ‘breathing’
You can choose about 5 symbols and say what they mean like ‘easy, difficult, used vent, puffy’ etc.

You get a month calendar view (and other views) where you can quickly choose a symbol to represent things and make a short note as well. Your calendar then displays symbols so at a glance you can see how your month went.

You can add as many topics as you want and even view a calendar which shows many topics. So for example, ladies can have a topic of fertility and another about how they feel – then at a glance you could choose a view which shows the merged data and see if you can see patterns forming (and you can print and e-mail it).

I record IBS symptoms, when I use my vent and medication so I can see pictorially how i am doing over the month and adjust things accordingly.

    My Medical

    http://www.mymedicalapp.com/

Available now on desktop and i-devices

Very versatile – stores medical data ( you can choose categories like CO2 levels or other things you don’t normally get in apps), photos (I photograph meds, hospital letters and my vent), store emergency data, details of doctors and how to contact them, you could store the MD fact sheets, plot trends, synch dr appointments with calendars … the list is endless. Takes a while to enter the data but worth it.

Food and allergy diary I use myAllergies

    http://myhealthsoftware.com/

A bit tedious entering data but I like it because it spots trends (and you can enter food, symptoms, sleep quality, energy and your own things which you can scale from 0-10 on a scale so I have things like bloating, wobbly, puffy etc.

Favourite sleep App = PZIZZ Sleep. Simply because of the timer and voice which distracts and relaxes rather than just ‘noise’.

Sarah is doubly in our “Good Books” today.

BBC iPlayer has indeed appeared out of nowhere……………and it works.
Thought there would be no point watchong things on the tiny 3.1/2 inch screen. But
it works perfectly, just watched the BBC flight documentary from last night. It is just
perfect. Well apart from the fact that there are no subtitles and it obviously cannot
do bookmarks. Then I got interrupted and found to my delight it does remember it’s exact
place and there is an “S” button that is of course subtitles. Magic.

This adds to my new specialist subject “computing from bed” and am debating if I
should set up a new “username” or persona “InBedFred” for commenting on these issues.
