    Where to hire carers from?

Hello all a bit of info if you please.

I think I am going to need some form of carer soon because the person who is helping me at the moment will not be able help out for much longer.

I was wandering if there is any local register or list type thing that shows the carers in the local area? Or is it a case of looking at local specialist employment agencies or putting an advert in the local paper/job centre.

Also if they need to do cooking is there a special insurance I need to get or do they need a special qualification, other than being able to cook, that I need them to have. Food hygene certificate or anything like that.

I relly dont know where to begin with all of this so any help would be great. :?: ;)

    Hi WW,

I think the first question is whether you are going to apply for funding or pay for the help yourself. If you receive funding you will I think need Employers Public Liability insurance. The insurance I pay is covered by my funding.

I have PAs funded jointly by Social Services and ILF, and I think different rules apply in terms of food/hygiene – it is up to me whether I require carers to have food hygiene, first aid certificates. I personally do not worry about that sort of thing.

You could approach a few care agencies, see what they charge but this is likely to the most costly type of care. How many hours do you think you’ll need?

I am only talking from my own knowledge here, you might find the National Centre for Independent Living UK website a useful read.

I would say that whether you fund your care yourself or ILF/Social Services fund it you should have Employers Liability insurance not only will it safeguard your carer but will also safeguard you.

As someone who employs carers I don’t bother with food hygiene/first aid certificates either I rely on good old common sense!

For advertising I have in the past used the job centre, local post office notice board, local newspapers

    Hello,
With regaurds to funding where do I find out about if I qualify for it. There is some info on the website you linked but it does not say where to go to find out about if I qualify for the funding. I am recieving ESA and I am in the midst of applying for the mammoth confusing benefit that is DLA. I do not know about any other benefit/fund I can apply for.

If I can get funding to help pay for the care then I will.

The care would mostly be for them to prepare and cook food, help with dressing, help to step in and out of the bath washing hair etc. I am very perticuler about my food. It needs to be freshly prepared and no processed rubbish, well a bit of rubbish every now and again. Other than that I am not sure what else I will need.

Over the day the minium amount of hours I will need I guess will be about 3 hours spread over the day. Can this be done? Is there a minimum amount of time that I have to book for. For example if I only need help for 10 mins one day but 2 hours the next can I do this without any notice? I suppose this depends on the individual carer.

Like I said I have know idea what so ever about these type of things.

I would start by contacting your local authority’s Adult Social Care services. What county are you in?

And Vicki is right, insurance is a must to protect employer and employee.

Try http://www.papool.co.uk if you can hire you’re own Personal Assistants/Carers and interview and train em yourself.

I can’t help with the initial question (don’t live in your delightful little country) but I can suggest that an understanding of food hygiene is a MUST.

My partner has carers who come in, don’t wear gloves, wear gloves which have been used elsewhere, don’t change gloves between the bathroom and the kitchen, drop food on the floor and endeavour to put it back on the plate.. but he’s too smart for them. Unfortunately it does mean that he has to watch them nearly every moment of the service, but it means he doesn’t get sick.

As he has said to me before, it’s bad enough having food poisoning when you can run to the toilet. When you can’t and you are relying on someone else to sit you up, what hope is there???

Common sense is unfortunately not so common anymore.

Are they agency care? Cause if they are I would complain.

AngelicPrincess, that is horrible what you and your husband are going through with his current home care team. Have you complained? An investigation should be set in place right away! Not changing gloves, reusing them and dropping food on the floor and putting it back on his place is just going too far! Don’t stand for this. I’m currently receiving homecare through a wonderful agency called Sevacare who apparently are up and down the country. I’d recommend you enquire into them and see if you can make a switch, for peace of mind and health :)
