    WAV’s (Wheelchair Access Vehicles)

    Hi guys quick question.

I wonder how many of you have a WAV through Motability. ? We have had one for 4.5 yrs now and its due to go back in dec 2014. We bought a Peugeot Teepee with ramped access and paid £850 deposit after selling the car we had to get a WAV.

My question is, I have been quoted through a brief phonecall with motability that the type of vehicle we are after a standard WAV with Ramped access etc. it will cost at this current time approx £1.200+ deposit. (non returnable) I am alitttle disappointed with having to pay so much considering we have to lease the WAV for 5 yrs when others can choose a standard car for 3 yrs with ZERO deposit. Standard user have multiple choices of cars to choose from where as WAV users have approx 4/5 to choose from.

I have been told that i can ring closer to the time and apply for a grant for the £1,200 + deposit but other things may be taken into consideration. ie because the car is good condition with low milage etc they may just say you have to lease the car for another 2 yrs extended. I feel this is unfair paying for 5-7 yr old vehicle and wondered if anyone in a similar situation to us has any thoughts on this.

I appreciate we should be grateful for getting a new car for nothing as some may say etc but we are paying for it after all, and its not cheap. Am i been pickey on my thoughts about this, maybe, maybe not. Would like to know what people think on this.

    Cheers.

I thought that once you kept car longer than the 3 years that you got money back on your rental. is this a myth???

the deposits have always bugged me. I need an automatic which means choices on a nil deposit is very few and only small 3 door types. I dont pick a car for vanity but by need. I need a boot big enough to fit a power chair and a hoist to lift is. so need a highish roof and correct shaped tailgate or chair and hoist dont fit. I also need an electric adjustable driver seat and handcontrol and handbrake button. this all add up on the deposit.

My car is coming up on 3 yrs but will be keeping it another 2 as my next car will need to be a drive from wheelchair and wont be cheap. and Automatic Drive from wheelchair cars are few. can only think of the VW CAddy.

I got help with my handcontrols, powered handbrake and chair hoist but had to pay towards the deposit of the actual car. Motability paid the model upgrade to get the Ford Electric Adjustable seat as a Adaptation to the seat to make it adjustable was twice the price. I also think their is a cap on the price of cars you can order. My Ford Grand Cmax wasnt on the list when they changed the rules about car price a few years ago. the manual was but not the Auto.

Hang in there and ask for help. you never know.

p.s your not being picky. I really seems unfair that the people at the most disabled end of the scheme need to pay high deposits for basic access to the cars. people like to bitch about us and our new cars but by the time we need wavs and large scale adaptations our choices are slim and some conversion are functional but not always that pretty.

Cheers Cat, it can get alittle frustrating at times.

Wav users have to lease for 5 yrs with full mobility payment throughout. They say its to pay for the adaptations required ie. Ramp, straps, lowering of floor etc. I get that but surely thats paid for over the 5 years. Who know. :bang:

What WAV dealers are they using cause theres more than 4/5 types out there.

This is why i got a bank loan to buy my WAV, motability is a bloody con and over the term of 5yrs, giving up mobility allowance plus any deposit you almost end paying more than a bank loan

HI Vicki. i have gone onto the Motability website and done a search for the type of WAV we would need. If you click the FIND WAVS BUTTON. it will then show you the limited amount available for our needs. This gives a £1,195 deposit.

    Search

    ALL WAVS
    Small Passenger
    2 or 3 Seats
    Ramp Access
    Rear Entry
    Manual Transmission
    Diesel or Petrol

And Here are he results below. Like i said pretty much standard vehicle.

Research research and research … when I bought my car back in 2000 [not a WAV], I was going to use Motobility for financing the project, the finance people VW use gave me a cheaper deal. My DLA mob covered the loan and a little left over.

Hi, I have a WAV through Motability. I had to go through their hoops first and try the three vehicles they suggested by having reps visit. Each time I went back to them and explained why the WAV was unsuitable, for example, I would be decapitated if I drove in further than the ramp!! In the end they pretty much said for me to come up with something and they’d consider. So I made a suggestion, tried it out and it ticked all boxes – Motability agreed it and I was able to get the grant for the deposit. I think in the end they got fed up with me and let me do my own research. I have a Fiat Multipla but I understand the car is not being made anymore so after the 5 yrs I’ll be back to drawing board. Good Luck with finding the right vehicle.

Im sure they would listen if this is your only way of gettin around vickie, give thme a ring and ave a word. My brother in law is our 2nd driver and lives 16 miles away and he’s on. I have to explain the reason why i need him as a 2nd driver on our next application. Which is if we go away for long trips or day trips we can share the driving. But im listed as the main driver on a probable 95% of the contract.

To be fair, the number of cars that you pay 0% on is pretty limited and they are also pretty basic. Any adaptions that are required (I have a hoist in mine for my mobility scooter) do have to be paid for though even at 0%. I am picking up my new car (A Skoda Roomster) on Saturday and am having to pay £300 for the hoist. To be honest, I do not begrudge it at all, If I add up the amount of money I save on Annual Services, Road Tax and Insurance I am getting one hell of a saving.

    Re: WAV’s (Wheelchair Access Vehicles)

Our car is due to go back in nov, after speaking to an advisor at motability the other day (who was amazing). She done everything she could for me and asked her grants manager for advice who informed her that because our car has low milage and good condition and the fact we want a similar vehicle, they would refuse a grant and push for the 2 year extension of the lease. If i want a new WAV i have to fund the deposit ourselves or seek other sources.

I spoke to allied suppliers of WAV vehicles (again amazing help) and they are bringing a new model Peugeot Partner Horizon for us to view on monday morning. The deposit for what we require is looking like £1,295 (unless £ change on 1st july changes)

So now we have to decide if we want to get the new car on Dec 1st or wait for the new reg in March 2015. Motability have already said they would extend te current lease for 3 mths if we wanted. Decisions, Decisions…
