Travel Insurance – Nightmare! Any advice?

    Hello

I was wondering if anyone has had any recent experience with travel insurance and if you found any good/reasonable quotes?

I’m trying to get travel insurance for a trip to America. I was told by my NHS wheelchair provider that I’d need to make sure my chair was covered by my insurance incase it gets damaged when I am away. I’ve had a nightmare trying to either find insurance that will cover me/my chair and give me a good quote.

I’ve been quoted between £300 -£500, which I think is really expensive. I also phoned my home contents insurance to see if my wheelchair would be covered under that. They said I would need to pay a bit more to have my contents including my chair covered for outside damage etc as I only have them insured for in the home.

I’m not really sure what to do for the best and can’t really afford to spent nearly £500 on top of everything else. What I wondered was, if I get normal insurance, and if something was to happen to me that wasn’t related to my condition would the insurance cover it? I have LGMD, I don’t take medication for it, I don’t need hospital treatment and don’t get ill because of it, so that’s why I’m wondering if the normal insurance would be enough plus just taking out the extra cover for my contents insurance to cover my chair.

Anyone had similar experiences or know of any insurance companies that don’t charge a fortune?

I’ve tried fish, Orbis, World First, Rock Insurance and a few others. Insure&Go are getting back to me on Friday with a quote regarding the medical side of things.

Why does travel insurance need to be so expensive for disabled people.

    Thanks
    Emma

I use Loxton to insure my wheelchair. I haven’t taken my electric chair on a plane but I had a specialised manual chair that I took when we flew to Barcelona. I have found them to be very good.

With regard to personal travel insurance I have heard premiums that cover existing conditions are pretty high.

Good luck, let us know how you get on with insurance and of course, all about your trip :)

Ah, I’ve been meaning to ask this for a while… I should have my power chair insured. It’s loaned to me by the wheelchair service & I should’ve always had it insured. Does anybody have theirs insured & who do you use please ?

I’ve used Fish in the past and now use Loxton because they have me a better deal for my complex chair. I have delicate control system and special seating and I think this company carer better for anything out of the ordinary. Fish might be better for standard issue nhs power chairs?

Apologies people, it’s Lockton Mobility not Loxton.
