The week I am getting a ceiling hoist…

    Day 1

The week has finally arrived that I am have a ceiling track hoist installed that will whizz me from my bedroom to my bathroom. It’s taken 18 months of OT visits, sling try outs, rep visits, housing officer meetings and numerous hurdles to get through but we are finally there.

Today, the building work prep was carried out. The door between bedroom and bathroom has been taken off and the bit above the door knocked through with a new door frame in place. New, taller doors will be made to fit in the coming days.

I have a whole load of feelings going on right now that I thought I’d share in case it might help someone else further down the line and also just to get it off my chest.

The advantages are clear: it will be safer for both me and my PAs, it will be easier than using the mobile hoist on the carpet as well so all manoeuvres will be smoother.

I will carry on with the rest later in the week with progress reports and explain more about what’s going through my mind.

Really happy for you that the moment has finally arrived. I will also be interested to hear your continuing story of the installation and first use.

    Day 2

I am writing this on day 3 as I was so frazzled by the end of the day yesterday. All the major installation occurred on the second day. I had to get up, dressed and in my power chair mega early and off the installation engineers went. Lots of scrambling about in the loft ensued and until about 3pm. When I sneaked the odd peak, my room looked no different until mid afternoon. Then it started to take shape, the h-track was bolted to the ceiling and to the joists in the loft. The electrician arrived to connect it to the power which took about half an hour and the final bit of track needed to be put in place. This was the tricky bit as it was the gate that joined up the moveable track in my room to the static track in my bathroom. It was millimetres out much to the lead engineers annoyance so they said they’d be back in the morning to fix that and then do a load test to make sure it was all safe.

Feelings today are a bit more positive as what is there already clearly shows how useful it is going to be. Yes it will mean a huge rethink as to the way we, me and my PAs do things, but change can be good and I know that we have reached the point where health and safety is an issue that must be addressed. I have got heavier (middle aged spread has come early!!), my PAs have been with me for a long time, they and I are getting older and I have become less mobile and more wonky and awkward to move around.

Will update later on or tomorrow on day 3.

So happy its coming together finally. Been a long road.

My latest Adaptation marathon is nearing completion. Will be sure to share once 100% complete and secure!! Just had a door closer fitted to external door. and they didn’t fit version we can lock!! Bit of miscommunication between companies and years of waiting.

That’s bonkers! These miscommunications do happen when there’s a lot of bods involved mind you. We had a slight issue today where one company had told the other the wrong thing. Hope it gets sorted soon.

    Day 3

The engineers cane back first thing to move a bit of the track that was millimetres out. Then it was load tested and we were shown how to operate it.

Carpenter arrived back to cut and fit the new doors and panel above the doors which had to be cut out to allow for the locking gate that allows the hoist to go through to the bathroom. He was here all day so I decided to go out and leave him to it.

So… we were able to use it for the first time :-o

Will fill you in on this a bit later once I have rested my texting arm.

    Day 3 continued…

This evening was the first opportunity to use the new equipment. Me and one of my PAs had practised getting the new sling correctly positioned for me in the months before the installation so I was pretty confident we could get it right. One issue had been the rigidity of the toileting sling material so On the suggestion of my OT, I sourced a gilet I could slip on to cushion the impact of having a corset type fastening around my middle.

A toileting/hygiene sling: designed to allow use of the toilet without the need to remove the sling (it has to provide a lot of lumbar support as basically the bottom area has no material underneath just pieces that go under legs supporting just above the knee).

My PA pulled the hoist across the room towards where I was lying on the bed so we could attach the 3 sets of straps the hooks on the loading bar. There are straps which go under my legs, cross over then get attached to the hooks on the corresponding side of the bar. Then the lumbar area straps which cross over my chest and secure through loops on the opposite side and then get attached. Lastly the top straps which pull up the back support and make me sit in a more upright position once in the air – picture something like a parachute harness. Then I was passed the control and up, up I went. Amazing! So now the track that traversed the room to pick me up had to be moved back across a little way so that it locked into the gate that allowed me to be slid along the tracked, over the connecting gate and through to the static track in the bathroom that curved round to the loo. Bingo!! I flew along the track and parachuted down on to the toilet  . We had to make sure the ventilator was brought along as well but this proved very easy as my PA could move me along with one hand and carry my vent in the other.

Will update on day 4 shortly.

So glad that you are now getting to use the kit. I trust it is living up to expectations.

Yes it is. We have used it for every transfer.

Am in Day 5 of the work. Day 4 involved sanding and priming new doors which have been especially cut to go around the lock gate at the top plus my ceiling needed plastering.

Today has seen painting of the doors and ceiling. I’m guessing tomorrow will be glossing? All I know is that that is the last day but we can of course use the equipment while all the decorating and making good is being done.

Slight spanner this morning when my daytime vent packed up. Having to use powerful night vent which makes it difficult to eat and talk. Engineers will be out tomorrow to sort.

Have been using hoist for over a week now. On Friday, it stopped working :-o – always a Friday or a weekend when these things happen. I had just transferred to the shower chair when it stopped so for the return transfer it was back to using the mobile hoist.

Luckily the engineer lives round the corner and popped in on the way home. A wire had come out at the top which meant it hadn’t been charging. It was reconnected and all was well until last night when my PA noticed the wire out again. On closer than inspection it seems that the wire is getting knocked every time the hoist moved through the door, it’s getting caught on the bit of wood that is under the lock gate – don’t know the technical term :?

Teething problems are to be expected I suppose but I’ll be glad to have a break from equipment malfunctions!

That must be so frustrating especially on a new install.

PS the technical term for the piece of wood is a Thingy!

This is proving to be a real learning experience. Me and my team of PAs are having to work together, head scratch and try different methods but I feel we are making progress. There is an awful lot to remember. I think it will probably take a few months before it gets established as part of the daily routine.

The OT will return in the next few weeks or so to watch it in action and write up a proper handling plan. She has been very thorough and has liaised with all the relevant bods throughout the process. She had the job of submitting the application. It has been jointly funded by my district council (in the form of a Disabled Facilities Grant) and my housing association.

Blimey, I’ve just noticed it’s been 4 months since I contributed to this thread.

Four months on and the ceiling hoist is firmly established into my daily routine. One of my PAs commented the other day that she was having a job remembering the manual handling old routine.

I admit that it has opened my mind a little to doing things differently and I have also found silver linings in taking on this new piece of equipment. Here’s an example: my physio observed yesterday that my hips and pelvis are much looser than usual, my range of movement has improved. I am convinced that this is due to the regular rolling I have to do to get the hoist in place. I was pretty chuffed at this revelation! I need to be mindful that my knees are a bit stiffer, hamstrings are tighter as I’m not straightening my KAFOs to stand as often but that’s manageable if I build stretches into my getting up routine.
