Jim is a contributor on the Myotonia Congenita site that I visit, he made this video to try and illustrate the physical problems that people with MC have to cope with.

My symptoms are worse than Jim’s, I can’t run even if I’m being chased by a Doberman, but his condiiton is severe enough to get the point across. Most people with MC have learned coping strategies that allow them to deal with the everyday instances when stiffened muscles would cause problems, like walking upstairs, but occassionally we get caught out.
It’s symptomatic of this disease that there are more videos on YouTube of myotonic goats falling over for people’s entertainment than there are films of humans who suffer with this condition.

I’ll let Jim know, he’ll be impressed!
October 29, 2010 at 8:15 am #76927Re: The People Who Faint Like Goats!I saw a few people on the train today reading an article in the Metro about the “fainting goat kittens” story. Of course it reminded me of Jim’s excellent video. Anyway, here’s the original “fainting goat kittens” YouTube video

December 15, 2010 at 9:40 pm #76930Re: The People Who Faint Like Goats!Oh! That is so funny! I’ve seen loads of ‘myotonic’ animals over the years on U tube also on sites linked to the disorder I am supposedly suffering from Periodic Paralysis! They a suffer symikar chromsome abnormities, often affecting ion channels.
I can keel over at the drop of a hat like someone has shot me with a tranqualizer! Lol!
Nature is a strange thing! MDecember 16, 2010 at 2:00 pm #76931Re: The People Who Faint Like Goats!I have missed this falling goats subject.
Can people give me some advice on how this happens ? My mother when she
got to 60 suddenly started just passing out when she got up from sitting or
from bed. With her she would go out like a light but then just not realise
that she had just passed out. Is this the same?I have never mentioned this to the specialists as I thought it had no relevance.
Her doctor said “positional vertigo” (is there such a thing?). By the age of 70 it
started happening more often and was given the choice of bedridden at home
with a carer or nursing home. She chose to stay at home but was only able to do so because of the I.L.F., suddenly
that option is different as Vicki and Sarah are now telling us. So very unfair!!"Even if you are not paranoid, it does not mean they are not out to get you!".
December 16, 2010 at 3:02 pm #76932Re: The People Who Faint Like Goats!Hi! Myotonia affects the muscles they contract then don’t release properly, Stiffness!
Does your mom pass out? By that I mean is she aware of her surroundings ,able to see or as you’ve described have no reccollection? If she is passing out that doesn’t sound like a Myotonic event to me!
I am no expert but she should have her blood pressure and heart checked! As problems with these can cause this, as in my sons, daughters, and my case- low blood pressure and arythmias mean transfering from one position to another can fascilitate this. Especially from lying-sitting-standing.
The vertigo issue I have no idea but sounds plausable, but as I always say don’t trust the medics! Get a second opinion!
Goodluck!December 16, 2010 at 3:14 pm #76933Re: The People Who Faint Like Goats!Ok! Now I’ve googles I M even more sure this may not be what your mum is suffering off,
the proper name and a link herehttp://www.emedicinehealth.com/benign_positional_vertigo/article_em.htm
My mum suffers this and it can come on by just walknig across a room! Or going up or down stairs also getting up from a chair, but she never passes out or isn’t aware of where she is! She is only 57, and has had ear problems all her life and an opperation on them.
So if I were you get a second opinion! X
