Has anyone done any OU courses?

I’m thinking of enrolling and curious as to what other people think of it?

I haven’t done anything to further my education, I haven’t got a great one anyway (me own fault) but, I’ve always wanted to learn another language. Just because I have so much free time & no other reason. Can anybody else speak another language ?

I did a basic writing course with them years ago, it was ok. All done over the computer, didnt have much interaction with tutor though.

    Hey Tyger,

I did my MA through the OU. It took three years and with the courses I chose, I was sent the year’s books/course materials at the beginning of each year and had to go to a number of tutorials at a study centre in my area. I liked this part of it as I got to interact with other students and have some really good discussions. I think there were between 6 and 8 tutorials per year, and the tutor were always contactable by phone or email.

I really enjoyed studying through the OU and found them very helpful. I was sent to my local university for an equipment assessment and was eligible for funding to get a laptop to do my essays and dictaphone to record notes/tape tutorials. My final year course involved a final exam which I was able to sit at home, with an approved invigilator and had extra time as I took longer to write my answers.

    What ya thinking of doing?

I did the European Computer Driving Licence with ILA scotland, revised at home online and then went into assesment centre to do mocks and exams..

really enjoyed it. I did it the winter so it gave me something to do in the darker nights..

    Thanks for the replies.

I’m thinking of doing a BA(Hons) Degree in English Language and Literature. I’ve spent the last few years helping my wife with the academic side of her nursing course and it’s whetted my appetite for more.

The one thing that concerns me is that I can’t find anything on the OU website about how much the course actually costs. I tried the calculator and it said that I would probably get financial assistance and that there was more available for disabled students. I suppose I should give them a ring.

I like the idea of attending tutorials at my local university and I have no problem working with IT throughout the course. It all sounds very exciting and my wife thinks it’s a great idea.

I might be considered a bit of an English Language bore but I did it for my first degree and absolutely loved it. Trouble is that when I say I did a dissertation on the dialect feature of yod dropping in the East Anglian region I see people’s eyes glaze over :?

Good luck with your enquiries and hopefully your subsequent studies!

Oww-err I am in the East Anglian Region and wonder if I have been dropping my yods everywhere.

When I was out of work back in the 1990’s, I enrolled in two correspondence courses GCSE English Literature and A Level Law – thoroughly enjoyed both courses. I did them purely as mental stimulation and occupation, and as a ‘doing now’ thing on my cv. I am seriously considering doing a Forensic Psychology course, but keep procrastinating about it.

Do you say “news” as [nooz] or [nyooz]? If it is the former you are a yod dropper :D

Wow, Forensic Psychology sounds a great course for a bit mental stimulation!!

Phew, my yods are safely where they are supposed to be, I say news. Is the pronunciation of film as fil-um a dropped yod – I must admit some strong accents make me shudder like nails down a blackboard!

As for the course, I wish I could get hold of a sample material to see if it is a tad over my head complicated.

    hi AMGmod

openlearn.open.ac.uk they have alot of OU learning materials covering lots of different subjects. I am sure they will have something for you,or the forum there is very good for finding sample revision and past papers.

I couldn’t insert a link because my laptop has decided to breakdown so I am using my PS3. This has very limited internet functions and no keyboard. Typing replies with a hand controller is very time consuming and extremely tedious!

    Thanks
