So I went out for a meal with my brother to a restaurant we have been many times before. Ignoring all the cars parked in the disabled bays without a blue badge in, we went inside, and tried to find something I could eat (I am vegetarian), and ordered drinks. Mine and orange juice, with a straw, because the glass of juice is too heavy for me and I thus get the shakes. I can have the drink, but no straw, “The Government has banned them all” the waitress said first. When I pointed out it was a proposal at the moment it then became “We are not allowed straw because it is in our licence agreement”. When I mentioned that many disabled folk like myself would need straws, and that they were probably going to be exempt anyway, the manager arrived, and tried to blag me with the same nonsense (three of my children are chefs).
The upshot of this is that I have now bought two metal straws, one for my car and one for the Dragon’s, to ensure I always have one now.
Drinkers beware!!So many love songs, so little love.
April 28, 2018 at 6:02 pm #156251Reply To: The Last StrawI too have just ordered some metal straws with a bend in to see how I get on. I agree with the need for an alternative but I am yet to find a suitable one. I feel I cannot comment about it until I’ve tried finding another option to plastic straws. What it would be nice to see is some effort being made by manufacturers to find a solution. How frustrating that the place you went to has already got rid.
I use average sized bendy straws and also the wider jumbo ones depending on where I’m sitting. I need the flexibility of the bendy bit or I’ll end up with a drink in my lap. Paper straws are not good for hot drinks. I am interested to see how the stainless steel ones go (mine come with a little diddy brush to clean them).
There has certainly been a lot of debate about the banning of straws. For and against. I’m probsbly somewhere in the middle of this one.
You would think someone somewhere could find a good solution and make a tidy fortune!!

the rubber type tasted weirdI worry about environmental impact but I have started mass buying straws.
I feel the issue is wider than straws.. I bought cup cakes other day that came in not one but two molded plastic dome containers.
They need to target ‘display’ packaging, that has no purpose other than to look good.
Paper straws. why are they two colours? this seems to add to the faulty design. they split alone the color join seem

Methinks I may need to get some longer ones than the standard length, before too long though.

May 2, 2018 at 2:27 pm #156329Reply To: The Last StrawI’ve recently bought a glass straw which I now use when drinking tea. I also bought a brush to clean it with and a small case should I wish to take the straw when I go out (I haven’t yet). However like catatude I’m building up a stock of plastic straws!

answer……….Pasta Straws!!Does that work?
Personally I only drink from my American Hospital Mugs.
These have large bore plastic straws that are easily washed and
reusable. Use them wherever I go so do not have do cope
with all sorts of issues. They have good straws that are integral to the sealable lid.
