Wow, how accommodating were our school with a new boy who turned up today in a wheelchair because he had BROKEN HIS LEG! Shame they can’t accommodate Joe (dmd) and his needs. At our last statement review and CAF The Head said joe couldn’t have his wheels in school as “they couldn’t accommodate it” and in her opinion “he doesn’t need it anyway” ….oh and afore mentioned family were parked in the disabled bay too… The one I fought for 4 years to get put in! Grrrr!
Beyond tired with that place.
Re: Talk about a smack in the mouth!Evidence to countermand what the school says. They can allow wheelchairs into the school, if they can for a child with broken legs than they can for Joe, that element of their argument can be thrown out.
Damn annoying though.

Re: Talk about a smack in the mouth!Well the other family didn’t park in the bay this morning, so think someone might have had a word! But I have decided to take Joe in as late as possible before register. Not playing anymore, life is too stressful and if it means his LSA is waiting around for him, so be it, will make a change! Had to do a return journey to take Joes coat to him and one of the PTA senior members was parked there, she saw me and mouthed “sorry” was quite tempted to run her sorry ass over so she could park there justifiably!
Re: Talk about a smack in the mouth!You need to find a school that will accommodate your son. My son went to a junior school that had nothing for disabled children. We fought for it and they had ramps fitted all round the school, luckily it was all on one level. Sorry to say the school is now shut down thanks to gouverment cutbacks. Good luck and keep fighting or look for A SCHOOL WITH A BETTER ATTITUDE.
Re: Talk about a smack in the mouth!We are trying hard to get him out of there, they are a disgrace. We know where we want him but it’s a huge fight with the LEA to get him transferred…we are just about to go to the appeals stage
Re: Talk about a smack in the mouth!My 9 year old son has DMD and his school are trying to encourage him to use an electric wheelchair at school. Probably another way of getting out of statementing him. Shove him in a wheelchair so he doesn’t fall over and we don’t have to employ someone to help him get up. Well tough titties, he is walking for as long as he can while he can. WE will decide when the time is right for full-time wheelchair use. They are quite a good school in some respects but the sooner he gets 1:1 support the better, which is proving to be a long process though. I sympathise with you, some things are just soooooo bloody annoying. AGHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I’m a SEN/TA newly employed to support an 8 year old boy DMD, I wouldn’t dream of him going into a chair yet! Yes he has stumble falls every now and again and is easy pushed off balance. He is highly spirited and enjoys running around seeing the joy on his face is so rewarding, even though he does nearly give me heart failure in case he falls badly.
He is the second child with DMD I’ve had the pleasure of working with. The first boy I supported is going to be 18 at the end of this year. I care so much about the pupils I work with and i hope you get the support in school he needs.
Fortunately I’m working in a lovely supporting school which every child should be entitled to. I suppose my message is keep going/fighting there are nice schools out there….Re: Talk about a smack in the mouth!it sounds to me like your son is being disciminated against. id mention things to the education board such as disability rights, the cab or even talking to a solicitor.

Re: Talk about a smack in the mouth!Just had a thought- I could be making this up- dont schools get additional funding from their LEA if they have a disabled pupil in attendance? If this is the case, then the funding they get is to be used for the pupil to provide that mythological level playing field….. so theoretically you could ask for proof of how that money is being spent. Anyone know if this is true or am I trapped in my ‘ideal world’ again?

Re: Talk about a smack in the mouth!In terms of additional funding for those with SEN -in our area (worcs) schools have what is called delegated funding which in effect means they already have the funding regardless of whether they have children with significant needs or not. It is only when children with a statement requiring more than 20 hours support that additional funding is granted on top of the delegated funding.
Schools with several children with additional needs will find themselves more financially challenged than others but I believe attitude is as important than funding -and this is where schools can differ greatly. Mike
