    Stationary Exercise Bike

    Hi all,

My dad has limb girder muscular dystrophy and lately he has been noticeably stiffer and in pain which is horrible to see and feel helpless. With all that’s going on with coronavirus, he is unable to swim or see his physio.

I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions of what he could try to help with his muscles? We are discussing the possibility of buying a stationary exercise bike for him to use. Does anyone have any experience with this or know of any worth buying?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have used various versions through out my life under supervised physio setting, at home and in the gym. They can be a good source of slow gentle exercise. The main issue would be type, your budget and could he safely get on and sit for a prolonged period on a standard bike.

Mini bikes can be used from regular chair, lying down and seated on a table to work on arms. Basic models are self propelled but if you go up the prices more spec available including automated supported cycle to take some of the struggle from rotations.

Examples of a low price range in link below to give you an idea of what they look like.

Going up the price ranges is the machine I use at the gym and have used at hospital with a physio. Used also from your own wheelchair or normal seat. These machines are called Motomed. and they can assisted with the workout. variable speeds or assisted peddling. (couldn’t find a link) Will be very expensive and not the time to be buying second hand right now.

Cant recommend any particular machine but above links should give you a visual idea of whats out there. I have a version of the cheaper one in above link for maintaining arm strength.
