Sleeping Pills – Myotonic Dystrophy type 1

    Hi there, :new:
I was just wondering if anyone knows if someone with Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 can take sleeping pills for disordered sleep. My husband is starting to really struggle at night. He drops off (sounding like he’s almost drowning/choking), then wakes up half an hour later and can’t get back to sleep. We have an appointment for March with his neurology team and I am trying to get him in sooner but in the meantime I have booked him an appointment with the GP in the hope of them giving him something at least until he sees the neurologist and has more investigations ordered (presumably) for whatever malfunction is occurring. Any advice/experience of this would be great to hear.
    Thanks

I think you have taken the right steps by visiting your GP. There are many factors involved with lack of sleep not just MD, and it is best that he/she gives you that advice. There are many simple steps you can take to help sleep like reducing or removing caffeine, having a relaxing bedtime routine etc. but hopefully your GP will have good news for you soon.

    hi

I would avoid sleeping pills till hes seen his doctors. It sounds like hes having apnea episodes where as hes falling asleep his breathing is disrupted. Sleeping pills can inhibit normal breathing function and if his issues are breathing quality the sleeping pills will sedate him but not necessarily offer a refreshing sleep.
