    Say hello to other parents

    Hi, if you’re reading this then you’ve found the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign’s exciting new Parents Education Network, a place for parents to discuss issues they are facing with their child’s education with other parents.

    My name is David Moore-Crouch and I am the Information and Advocacy Officer at the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. I’ve been working for the charity for over 6 months and in that time I have been working hard on improving our service to parents and schools. Prior to this I worked as a Special Needs Teaching Assistant.

    The aim of this forum is for you to chat to other parents about all manner of issues relating to your child’s education. These issues could include SEN statements (A hot topic at the moment), choosing the right school for your child, managing behavioural problems or Post-16 Education, transition, transport, getting the right equipment or care packages.

    The charity has recently gone into partnership with Treloar College who have kindly donated the time of their staff who will be on hand to answer any question you might have. Ruth Bryan, a special needs teacher with 25 years experience, will also be offering advice and support.

    Now that I’ve introduced you to PEN all that’s left to do is to welcome you. I hope you find this forum useful and that it helps you navigate the minefield that is the education system.

    Hello :) and a group just for parents of a child with M D :D
    I wish someone could have told me about this when it was set up 2 years ago! :roll:
    My son is 15 and we are now into the transition stage and thinking to a future which is a long way from where we were 3 years ago when we were told by the medics he only had a year left on this earth! :shock: I range from being :cry: to feeling :twisted: and then :oops: and anything in between. :roll:

    We just don’t know what to plan for, there certainly is a lot to think about :? and I was wondering who is the best person to talk too. I feel so very isolated as me and my husband have occasional totally opposing thoughts :roll: on the route we would like our son to take. The choice has to be his I know but some guidance from those who know, or who have been there would be good.

    P.S. I meant to say Hi Badger! :oops: My son’s favourite T.V. programme was Badger and Bodger for a long, long time ;) and mashed potato was the only way he would eat then for YEARS!! :roll: :lol:

    Hello BJsmum and welcome to PEN!

    I’ve never heard of Badger and Bodger! I’ll have to look it up! Regarding your issues with transition we have a number of projects that you may find helpful. We have a publication dedicated to transition which would be very helpful. You can order this from our information team at info@muscular-dystrophy.org

    We are also starting up a new mentoring programme which puts young people with these conditions in touch with someone a little older who can offer advice and support in taking the next step.

    Our regional care advisors are also great sources of help and support and would be able help you with any of your queries. If you let me know where you are based I can direct you to the closest care advisor. Or if you like you can call us at the office and we would be more than happy to chat with you!

    well I am not a parent but my parents are facing financial difficulties for my siblings education… they do not want there children to get a low quality education… I have started to do a part time job so that i can be of any help.. any suggestions are welcome
