    Private letting

    hello guys.
I am looking for information on private letting as i need to move to a bigger flat for my 2 daughters. I currently live in a 1 bed housing association flat 20 miles away from my kids, i need to move to their area and have at least a 2 bed flat but will have to consider the private sector due to lack of movement in social housing.
What i really want to know is will my DLA (£390 per month) be classed as income as i am on ESA and not working?
Almost all the flats i see advertised say no DSS (bit out of date lol) and i am despairing of getting a move at all as i am considered adequately housed by my housing association, i only have my kids every second weekend. I want to take my ex to court for joint custody but know i would stand no chance being 20 miles away and in only 1 bed.
It is a bit of a catch 22 because i can’t have the kids without the move and wont get the move without the kids, very unfortunate situation indeed.

    Thanks in advance.

    Ranald.

I’m not sure about DLA being classed as income but what about a home swap. My housing association and I’m sure yours would and most councils allow home swapping now and it doesn’t have to be between the same housing organisation. Councils have a swap list as do housing associations. I’ve put two links below for you to check out.

    Home Swapper

    House Exchange

With regard to the 2 bedroom problem have you told them that you need an extra bedroom for when your daughters visit, that you want them to beable to stay overnight some councils and housing associations will take this into consideration.

    Hi Ranald,

I just came across something that explains that “dss” in relation to private renting tenants means those who are in receipt of housing benefits. Don’t know if that makes it any clearer?? :? I guess as well, it comes down to individual landlords.

Good luck and if I find out any more then I’ll let you know.

    Hi Ranald

DLA is not counted as income when claiming Housing Benefit Thh level of DLA payable may give you premiums which can actually increse the amount payable.
If you do a google search for Housing Benefit calculators you will be able to input your details and get an approximate Housing Benefit payment.
Good Luck with finding new place to live
