    Pregnant and scared.

Hi everybody. I’m new here but I feel this is the best place to get answers to my questions.
I have just found out I’m pregnant, roughly 6 weeks although this is yet to be confirmed. I am also a carrier for Duchenne, I was tested very young at 16, as my mother is a carrier so made me get the test done. I have a younger brother who has Duchenne, he is now 20 and my mum had no idea she carried the gene as it did not present itself before her.

Anyway, I now find myself 6 weeks pregnant and I am faced with prenatal tests to determine whether I have transmitted the disease to my baby. This is my first child and so I am very unfamiliar with the process of prenatal testing I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice or information about what is going to happen to me and how long the tests take? I just want to know if my baby’s ok. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow to inform my doctor of my pregnancy and the inherent need for testing.

    Thanks in advance,
    A

    Hi Vicky,
Thank you so much for your reply. That was the most helpful fact sheet I’ve seen, I feel I understand the process a bit better now. Didn’t realise that my mum would have to get involved in these tests, think that’s going to stress her out. Hopefully they will already have all my info on my medical records from my carrier test 7yrs ago.
    Hope you are well,
Alice (realised I didn’t put my whole name last time!)

When my ex wife and i found out she was pregnant, we were told that any sons would be unaffected, whilst daughters would only be carriers. We subsequently had two daughters with carrier status.

I really hope you receive the correct help and advice, it must be awful for you. I only found out i had Becker MD, aged 28. I know my mum feels very guilty about that, not that it’s anyone’s fault of course.

    All the best

    Hi Ranald,
28 is very late, i can imagine that was very hard. Useful information about your ex wife though, thanks.
And I’m currently sat in the doctors waiting room waiting for my appointment, incredibly nervous as this pregnancy is unplanned and a complete shock! Thankfully my other half is lovely and supportive. Will let you both know how my first appointment goes.
