Hi all,
On Monday we found out that our gorgeous little boy is suffering either from Duchenne’s or Becker’s MD. He is 13 months old. We discovered by chance, as he’d been hospitalised with a stomach bug and a routine blood test showed his CPK to be off the scale. Samples were sent off for genetic testing and on Monday we sadly discovered he has MD, most likely to be Duchenne’s unless his guardian angels work overtime. He’s currently symptomless as he’s so young, and the two neurologists we met since Monday advise just to sit out the next few years as there really is nothing to be done for him when no symptoms are present.
It’s been a hellish week, we are working hard to come to terms with this. My question is this: we live in Greece and now we can’t get him private health insurance as it’s a pre-existing condition. So far all the care we have received has been for free on the Greek NHS, and I can’t fault it at all. I just wanted to look into private insurance thinking about the future, as we’re willing to go wherever the latest research is or the best doctors are. I spoke to Bupa International this morning and they won’t cover us.
Does anyone know of any providers who would cover us for a pre-existing condition such as this?
Thanks in advance for your help and may we all find the strength to get through this trial.

I just wanted to find out if anyone would insure him now with this condition but so far seems no. I’ve already met MDA Ellas, and as you said, they’re great people their positive outlook really helped. x

I’m sure the last thing you need at the moment is to worry about insurance companies, they are the scum of the earth as far as i am concerned. (almost on a par with politicians)
There must be cover available somewhere, but i bet they would charge you a King’s ransom. These crooks aren’t interested in paying out of course.
All the very best
