    power chair accessories

Can anyone recommend accessories for a power chair to help me feel a bit safer in it, things like mirrors, do they have mirrors specifically made for powerchairs or can I get that kind of thing from Halfords? Does anyone have reflectors added for use at night or some kind of torch headlight?

Do you have any accessories that you would recommend, or can anyone suggest a website that I could check these things out on please?

    Hi 7rainbows,

Thanks for the post :) I am sure the lovely forum can give you some tips!

If you got your powerchair through wheelchair services it might be worth seeing if they can give you some advice too?

I know that the Trailblazers are always sharing tips on powerchair accessories so it might be worth posting a question in their facebook group also. You can join it here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mdctrailblazers/

    hi

is this what you have in mind http://wheelchairs.com/mirror.htm its a US shop but may be worth contacting them to see if they have a UK supplier.

buying a hi vis vest or bag and attaching/wrapping around back of seat is a popular and cheap way of staying seen. available from pound shops and halfords. both have and prob ebay will have hi vis stickers and bands to attach to chair.

In terms of visibility I recommend things a cyclist would use – reflectors that stick on including tape, lights – I have one on my footrest bracket that helps people see me in the dark and for me to see what’s coming in front, also ones that run down the side of my backrest in a vertical column. :)

    What about second breakfast?

I use rechargeable bike lights as they will not drain your batteries like if you get lights fitted to the chair. Mine are also chargeable via usb & I always carry the plug converter & the usb lead with me to plug in anywhere, should I feel they’re low. I also have a high vis cyclists ruck sack attached to the rear of me chariot that carries me incidentals, including said leads & plugs & lights as I don’t tend to leave them on the chair permanently in case some buggar arf inches ’em.

And finally, my favourite, I had one of me little twonk mechanic brothers fit an old fashioned bulb bike horn that goes “PARP, PARP!”. Not for any safety reasons you understand, just cos I like pulling up behind people & making them jump out their skins  .

Way to go Wonder Woman, I would sure like to do that myself, but I was thinking of a steam train noise.
I have seen in SOuthport, two power wheel chair users who had flashing lights on poles fitted to their machines. Like the sort you find on the top of mechanical diggers, tractors and the like. I have found that in my scooter even having light on and a high vis vest that pople do not ‘see’ you. I often wonder if that is a choice rather than a visual difficulty!
I have found that ‘normal’ mirrors on my scooter are almost worthless, needing something like wagon mirros to see properly in department stores and the like. I do have a case for my mobile phone on the handlebars. It is waterproof and allwos me to use all the functions without having to root around in pockets and other things trying to find it. A blue tooth earpeice is also very valuable
