Panic button / Fall alert / emergency call auto dial machine
I am soon going to be spending most of my time alone and am concerned about falling and having to wait three days before somebody shows up or my cats eat me.
I have been looking at two models of alert button things, one has a base station and a thing that goes around your neck and the other is just a big phone.

Do pay as you go sims run out if you do not use them?
Should I just save the money and use an old phone?
Re: Panic button / Fall alert / emergency call auto dial macI have considered using a panic button, but as my home is all one level, the probability of falling medium risk and access to a phone [home landline or mobile] immediate, I decided against it. I can easily call several people to come rescue me or a 999 call if things are more serious.
It’s a sort of risk assessment, probabolity of need, and who you need to contact and wheher those elements justify the expense.

Re: Panic button / Fall alert / emergency call auto dial macI have fallen before but always been able to stand up, the last time took 45 min and now I have a broken kneecap and all the surfaces I used to climb have been raised by the OT. So my risk of falling is increased as my ability to get up has decreased. I definitely need to get something, I just want feedback from people who have used one so I can make an informed choice as to what model or method.
Re: Panic button / Fall alert / emergency call auto dial macI have a lifeline system that I don’t have to pay for but I cannot remember the eligibility for free service. The website for my local lifeline supplier says £3.50 a week and one off installation charge. There are different types of system – I have a wrist band instead of a pendant which links to the main unit in my hallway.

Here in somerset it is called “Carelink” servcie and the machine Piper Lifeline. There
are different regional variations.Here the cost is £ 4 a week or £ 2 a week if you get means tested benefits. Now the installation
charge has been removed.There is either a wristband or a round the neck version so it is with you all the time. Then if you are down on the floor you
can alert the control centre. They will ask over the speakerphone if you need assistance. If you cannot reply
they nknow to send help.My neighbour had her wheelchair go through the floorboards just when her mobile was being recharged

Re: Panic button / Fall alert / emergency call auto dial macI have a community alarm service which I admittedly when I moved in thought was ‘uncool’ it does give me peace of mind. It’s run by the council rather than an independent service. I’ve, thankfully, never had to pull it other than to tell them I wouldnt be in so I dont know if they’d just call 999 if I did fall and was unable to get up.
To give you an idea what they look like, it’s the same kind of alarm on a string you see in disabled toilets…
It might be another avenue to explore to see if they’ll wire you in, but I warn you, no lie ins allowed – they ring if you have been inactive between a certain period.

Connects to your existing landline and is programmed with 3 numbers that you can dial out in the event of an emergency. Also receives calls so for those who aren’t keen on carrying mobile phones, this may be a good idea?

So I have a button that attaches like a watch or necklace. I press it and it tells the base station to call into the call center and they send a guy with keys to my house to come and help. I have never had to use it since I had it installed a few months ago but it has made me feel safer.Re: Panic button / Fall alert / emergency call auto dial macI get mine from the council but, have to pay. You need to be getting less than a certain amount to get it for free here & I get too much. Although having had it two years & falling occasionally, I’ve yet to use it cos I instinctively use my mobile so I’m considering returning it for somebody else to benefit… And save £4 a week

For the more techno aware of us a mobile is replacing these panic buttons.
