Oxford Astra Zenica Vaccine.
Hi,
I’ve just had my first dose of the Oxford vaccine and I’m not anti-vaccine in any way; I’m really grateful to have been offered it. My problem is that I’ve avoided having the flu vaccination for several years as I noticed that after each vaccination I got a bad chest infection (life-threatening for me). Unfortunately, the same thing happened the next day after the Covid vaccine: my temp shot up, my SATS dropped and I thought at the time that I just couldn’t go through this again, I’m on full time ventilation and needed oxygen etc etc.I need to balance my quality of life with risking a repeat of that experience with another dose; I need to get back out again when it’s safe and I’d rather have the vaccine if I could have it safely but now I don’t know what to do, whether I should just stick with one dose as the efficacy seems high anyway or go for the second dose in the hope that my response might be milder the second time.
Please don’t let my situation affect anyone else’s decision re. the vaccine, I think everyone should take it if they can and I definitely would too if I didn’t get so sick. I have a particularly severe form of CMD and my experience will probably be different from most people’s with M.D.
Any thoughts would be welcome thanks.
Reply To: Oxford Astra Zenica Vaccine.Something for you and your MD or respiratory specialist to talk over. I too had a high temp within 24 hours of first vaccine but it quickly passed and was away morning after leaving just ache feeling on arm when touched for around a week.
Although the first vaccine has a high effectiveness rate its the second that aids the longevity.
Not really a right or wrong answer as its all personal choice and only a doctor can really weigh the risks on persons health etc.
What you could maybe look into is asking medical peeps to help you prepare to manage the after symptoms. Not endorsing this but I took paracetamol few days leading up and after as I normally do for the flu jag to stabilize temp.

Thanks for the reply and helpful suggestions. My respiratory team are on the front line so I don’t really want to give them more work to do but I might have to get in touch or I might just go for it anyway.
I take paracetamol and Brufen and it usually helps but my temp still spikes up inbetween although I was lucky that this only lasted four days this time. It was like a flu and someone else in my house who got the Oxford also had flu-like symptoms for longer but less severely; the other person in my house had Pfizer and got off with just a tender arm!

I understand your concerns and it is your decision ultimately. It’s hard to advise but the suggestion of discussion with your resp team is a sound one. That’s where I’d start as well.

Reply To: Oxford Astra Zenica Vaccine.Thanks SAR78; glad you’re better now. I’m going to speak to the team about my options but they’re general respiratory rather than MD specific so I’m not sure how much more they’ll be able to tell me but you never know.
