    Muscle MRI

Wondering if anyone has had an MRI of muscle. Been told I have to have one but since our bodies are full of them I am wondering which ones they will look at.

    THANKS

Had one about 18 months ago. They did the fullest body scan possible, I remember having to
stay still for an incredible amount of time whilst it went the whole body length.

    You have guessed it, inconclusive.

I had my legs scanned in January. I thought I would have had my whole body scanned as I’m affected all over. The results showed which muscles were most involved, but no clear diagnosis. The scan took about an hour.

I hope your scan goes well, keep us posted :)

    Hi,
I had both upper and lower legs MRI scanned late last year. I asked Prof. Bushby in Newcastle why they only took scans of the legs when other muscles are also wasting. She told me that “scans of other muscles are inconsistant and difficult to interprit”.

I had my legs scanned a year or so ago. It was a good way to spend a birthday. The most exciting bit was the fun we had getting me onto the trolley and into the scanner, as the hospital had lost track of where their hoist was.

The actual scan was very reminiscent of listening to Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music.

And come to think of it, they still haven’t told me any results. I need to follow that up.

No date for MRI as yet, been advised it will be end of August at the earliest….currently trying to expedite for a number of reasons.

Dont know why as it will probably not change things as my body like many others with these conditions only likes to give little clues at a time.

After my deterioration/progression of late I was advised to contact Newcastle to check where we are at the as the Physio feels I need review.

Got told today I will have a date within the next few days for my MRI and it will be soon after this so not going to have to wait to August after all. I will see Neuro on same day. We will be able to arrange review by specialist NMD physio at that time.

That is a long and stressful day.

But these are the vital people, it might turn out and good and important day.

I have learnt that you must pace yourself and spend any amount of money to save energy and stresses
    on the day.

Yes, good luck. I know what you mean about it being an exhausting day, especially if travel is involved. I normally clear the few days afterwards so I can rest and recover.

Well today is the day I get to go to Newcastle. Been up really early hence my posting as I would normally be giving it zzzzz at this time. Not apprehensive at all. Tried to do some stuff yesterday that would fatigue me and my muscles so they could see the impact but as usual my body didnt play ball and would let me do too much.

Really hoping today will be useful as not liking the direction things are good in terms of the issues im having.

My MRI is to be of pelvis, as well as both upper and lower legs.

I have booked tomorrow off work as recovery time as it took a lot out of me last time and I planning in flopping into bed when I get home 2nite, will let you all know the outcome once I am back in one piece.

    Cheers

    Re: Muscle MRI

Sorry for the delay in response had quite a week of it so just catching up with myself now

Newcastle have confirmed I am progressing, doh like I dont already know that. I didnt see the NMD physio and if I want referral to one I need to go back and see my local Neuro whom I was distancing myself from…I apparently cant get to see her till October so think its time I buttered up her Secretary. Need to do this as only have one more session with local basic physio and I feel the difference when I dont go.

MRI result is still not available yet, they will write when it is. They think they have enough muscle left from my biopsy and if so they are going to look for deficient or missing proteins in the muscle but have been told they dont expect to be able to give me a diagnosis anytime soon. Been advised to try and keep myself as fit as possible as that all I can really do.

They are writing a report for my DLA reapplication and work’s occuptational health department. Specialist Nurse asked me if I had got sorted, could have ranted at that point as she had only ignored my calls and emails for a month.

Seems like a negative appointment but it wasnt really that bad. The fall outside the hospital and the ones I had had each day since are more negative but im using that as my reason to hopefully get the physio referral.

Dont have an appt to go back but will be seen again in due course, they are ok about me transferring my care there as long as I keep local links with services for times of problems.

    Cheers

    Re: Muscle MRI

    Thanks for letting us know.

Will be a frustrating time I know, that you are not getting exact and immediate answers. That sadly is
the way of the world and par for the course. That is the way things work out with the current methods of
testing. One consultant wrote to me explaining that although things are advancing fast they still
are basically only testing for levels of particular proteins or chemicals in any sample, usually
to rule in or out one particular diagnosis or theory. This in itself is an advance from previous
years when people were just left with incomplete diagnoses.

Getting my own latest set of DNA test results next week and just pleased they are spending so much time, money and
effort on me. Every step in the right direction will help us. Indeed one new piece of information could be the difference between getting a new treatment or vital coping strategy that could save a life or enable a person to remain
    at work.

However frustrating, often it is good to stay positive that they are by now ruling out some
really horrible options and getting closer all the time. Maybe this or the next test will be the
vital one. Bad that you have had a couple of falls but good that it presumably did no major damage
and may lead to new physiotherapy options. I had a couple of falls a couple of weeks ago
and suddenly a new GP is taking an amazing interest and awareness. In MD world things
that seem bad often work out well in the end.

Just thought I would tell you that my MRI of muscles in Newcastle wasnt helpful as suspected so more test on biopsy sample after all although they are not optimistic that they will be able to diagnose me anytime soon :(

On a plus point I have now spoken to my local Neuro in Glasgow and I am getting referred to a specialist Neuromuscular Physio after all. May have to wait a bit to be seen but just glad to see the right person. Been away at a conference this week and so missed my physio session with occ health and have now seized up again.

    Best wishes

Sorry you have had another non diagnosis.

    So very very frustrating.

They keep telling me how on these tests they are only looking for one or two things, like the level of a certain
chemical or a certain mutation on a certain gene. Reading between the lines it is just a needle
    in a haystack thing.

Excellent silver lining that you are going to an MD trained Physiotherapist. They will be able to give
    real, relevant and concrete help.
