    MRI and vent

I was told on Tuesday that I’m going to need an MRI so immediately started worrying about breathing whilst horizontal in the scanner – I can’t do 5 minutes let alone the 30 required for the scan!

This morning I had a phone call from radiology asking me if I could come in next Tuesday, less than a week away aaaargh! The first radiographer said they’d simply swap my mask for an oxygen one – this is no substitute however and can have adverse effects so I explained this and was put through to the senior radiologist who said what they’ve done before is have a super long tube so the machine can be placed outside the room.

So… I then rang the techies at RBH who are as we speak making me up a 6 metre tube from something called elephant tubing and sending it out to me. What I did not know was that the vent settings will need to be changed because the tubing is so long and it changes the efficiency, kinda makes sense.

We’ve had discussions about MRI and vents before so thought I’d share this info and will let you know whether it works out and I get my MRI!

Glad they are working this out at this stage of the proceedings and not when you turn up for the scan.

It does make sense as the vents work by continuous air pressure so a longer distance to the
machine itself will need the a rejig on the physics calculation. A larger bore tube
will probably be needed to keep the correct airway pressure over the longer distance.

Thankfully it sound sound like they know what they are doing.

Hope you managed to get your MRI scan without too many difficulties and the results were good. Im quite shocked how many hospital depts dont understand the issues we have having simple tests done.

    Best wishes

The MRI had to be postponed as the extra long tubing needed for my Bipap didn’t arrive in time, in fact has got lost. Second lot was sent and came next day but sadly too late for the appointment. Waiting for a new date now. I suggested that the respiratory ward at Guy’s would have the tubing I required but they wouldn’t get involved as the Brompton takes charge of my vent requirements.

I agree, getting people to understand can take a lot of effort!! Most wrongly assume it gives me oxygen.

..sounds like a lot of effort for no result.

Let’s hope it can be speedily rearranged.

We need a masters degree in logistics when it comes to equipment, personnel and appointments! Nightmare for you Sarah, so much for it being an across-the-board NHS, left hand not only doesn’t know what the right hand is doing, but also doesn’t want to touch it with a barge pole!!
