Mild foot drop

    Mild foot drop

    Hi, was just wondering if anyone had any experience with mild foot drop (due to weak dorsiflexors). My neurologist wanted me to have AFO’s for this but the physio she sent me to disagreed. I am tripping on uneven ground and have quite bad fatigue from concentrating on every little step I take.

    Anyone have any experience? What would be the benefit in holding off on them?

    Hello and welcome. Foot drop is not uncommon amongst those of us with MD. I have a little myself. I am sure someone will come along soon and offer their take on the situation. It is a difficult situation to be in with specialists offering contrasting advice. Perhaps it may be appropriate for the physio to write to your neurologist and come to a joint conclusion that will help you.

    Hi it would really depend at this point what they are supplying to what outcome on delaying or not. If its full foot and calf you may get slight reduction on power and control when not wearing. but they might give more stability.

    Its impossible to know the down the road effect of wearing or not wearing.

    I wear a heal lift in one shoe to even up stance due to hip tilt. when I walked independently age 12 to 30(ish) I had a molded insole to support my arches. its common for MD people to have poor arch definition ie flat feet.

    I would tend to ask for referral to Orthotics Dept who are lower limb specialist. Many years ago I had a test while walking and they mapped pressure points in feet where the muscles and joint where misbehaving.
