People are suggesting these new wonderful, Memory
Foam Pillows.Keep waking up at 3 – 5 AM with a neck pain. But I
am already using a hard orthopaedic pillow. It is
obviously not doing the job.Has anyone any suggestions ? Is memory foam the
answer or is there a different gizmo ?"Even if you are not paranoid, it does not mean they are not out to get you!".

I changed to a memory foam pillow last year and in the beginning it was an improvement but then after a few months I started getting neck and shoulder ache. I swapped back to my old pillow which is a foam egg box style but rapidly falling to bits but the neck and shoulder problem went. I am going to have a trawl through to find a pic of what I am using.

Thanks your input.
Went to GP today on neck problem.
After drawing and describing my ancient pillow he thinks it
is doing nothing to stop any sideways miovement and being
orthopaedic I do not sink down into it like a normal pillow. So
we are looking at different pillows.Cheeky devil says we will try a dual pronged aproach and gave me
Pioroxicam gel just in case it is just arthritis (too young for that)"Even if you are not paranoid, it does not mean they are not out to get you!".

A GP said I had/have arthritis in my big toe joint, I was 5 at the time, he said it was child arthritis and I would grow out of it – still got it – does that mean I am still a child? [rhetorical question folks, no need to answer, I ‘think’ we know the obvious response ]
I used to get a lot of problems with my elbow, tennis elbow or compy-itus rsi, I used voltarol gel and pills, tried ibuleve and paracetamol, ended up having a series of steroid jabs in the joint, they did help and thankfully whatever was causing that issue has moved on. I think it was transitional with my muscles deteriorating.

Went through all those horrible gels and NSAID’s during 10 years in Rheumatology before I
even saw a Neurologist.Transitional is a good word as I am sure our bodies and conditions are constantly changing
with time. Several have posted that often there is a complex interplay of different factors
in each one of us that sadly often never is fully addressed.I have noticed a tendency, the moment a medical person reads in your notes about rare
neurological condition that is all the look at. With me, stomach problems and bowel
problems immediately brought comments like “There are a lot of muscles down there”. I
often look at them and hear the line from OF&H, where Rodney says to Dell “You are
bloody enjoying this”. One junior doctor piped up once, “Mr Fox is quite entitled
to have more than one condition”.
Maybe we will all get there one day."Even if you are not paranoid, it does not mean they are not out to get you!".

Thanks Sarah.
This is very similar to the one I have been using for
twelve years or so. Has the roll neck but large dimples rather
than large egg box shapes. Maybe this allows the slight movement
that causes the problem. Glad to see there is a chunkier
option.I note your memory foam did work for a number of months.Primark have memory foam pillows on offer at £ 10. At least I
am trying something different. Thanks the input."Even if you are not paranoid, it does not mean they are not out to get you!".

Good news and bad.
Good News. After a test of three days no neck pain at
all. Therefore it is not Arthritis. Hey this is not good news this
is great news. So the moral of the story is change the
pillow every now and again.Bad news, that on two of the days I am woken at about
5 AM with the “Drenching Sweats” that we have been posting
about. The memory foam information goes on about how
it responds and picks up on your body’s warmth, so maybe
that is it. Should be fine in winter then or try a lot less bedclothes.Looking at my old one, it has definately sunk and degraded so
the best option may well be Sarah’s Eggcrate one and that is
a good price on it too."Even if you are not paranoid, it does not mean they are not out to get you!".
April 27, 2011 at 2:07 pm #80127Re: Memory Foam Pillows ??Hi taungfox,
I too struggle with being too hot at night. I recently got this pillow: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1275009/Trail/searchtext%3EMEMORY+FOAM+PILLOW.htm for an ear pressure sore. I wondered if it might be suitable for you too? It has holes in to make it more breathable. I haven’t had any problems with it – I put two pillowcases on it (the one which came with it and a normal pillowcase) and it does not seem to make me any hotter than with my feather pillow, in fact it seems a little bit cooler.
April 27, 2011 at 4:07 pm #80128Re: Memory Foam Pillows ??Well this sounds right on the ball. Thanks.
It is breathable !!! Cool and Dry !!
“Breatheasy airflow technology helps to keep you cool and
dry while the ergonomic design moulds to your natural contours.”Seems to have the best of all worlds.
The other one makes a questionable virtue of trapping
your body heat.Have always thought that with neuromuscular people
there is a lot of understanding to come on temperature
control issues.Thanks again.

April 27, 2011 at 4:20 pm #80130Re: Memory Foam Pillows ??I have trouble getting temperature just right, it is a small window before I am too hot or too cold. And just to be awkward it varies so I can be boiling up top but my feet are fffreezing! It’s like my body is in two different climates lol

Temperature control is an issue for people with
muscle disease.I thought bit was to do with lslow circulation (54 BPM), but no
one had the same.I think we store a lot of heat in muscle tissue and disease
of these tissues must affect things."Even if you are not paranoid, it does not mean they are not out to get you!".
