    Medication stage

Hi there, I’m new to this site.

My son aged 6 has been recently diagnosed with DMD. We are now at the stage where we need to decide on his medication. Medication that has been put to us is the steroids Deflazacort or Prednisone. It’s a tough decision to make, at the same time where thinking we want the best for our son but do we really want him to go through all the side affects that come along with it. I appreciate all medication has side affects I know that but some of them are really bad. We are absolutely devastated about this but we just need to be strong for our boy. I am just posting to see if anybody else has decided to go against the steroids and maybe use other medication? Or maybe have used steroids and they have been fine?

We do a lot of stretches and exercise, and he loves swimming 😊.

Any information would be much appreciated, thank you.

    Chris

I think it is important to follow the advice of the specialist. Indeed there are possible side effects but you must also consider the side effects of not using the medication. If you do go ahead with the steroids your son will be very closely monitored so that he will not be impacted further by the medication.
It is a very difficult decision process for and child being offered medication , I am sure you will make the correct one, But it will be interesting what others have to say.

    Hi Chris,

Thank you for getting in touch. We understand that receiving a diagnosis can be a difficult and upsetting time and appreciate that considerations and decisions may need to be made regarding medication. We understand that it can be valuable to speak to and hear from others who have a personal experience and thought it might be helpful to share that we also have a parent support group on Facebook which you may want to join. The parent support group is a supportive, safe environment where you can ask questions, get advice, share your story, and talk about the issues that matter to you, and can be accessed through the following link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mdukparentsupportgroup. We would also encourage you to discuss any concerns you have with your son’s specialist team, as they will be able to share additional information, and support you further with this. As a charity, we can also support you further and our helpline team are available to share further information about the support available to you and your family. Please do get in touch with our helpline if you need further support or have any questions, on 0800 652 6352 (Mon-Thur, 10am-2pm) or over email on info@musculardystrophyuk.org.
