    Level access shower

I have just had the clerk of works from my housing association up to inspect my bathroom. I had an OT assessment last summer, and they decided i needed a move, but a level access shower would be a temporary fix.

The housing association have announced their intention to replace the bathroom suites in my block, i pointed out that i am still waiting on them installing a shower. i told them i didn’t see the sense in them spending good money only to have to replace it with a level access shower in the near future. (if they ever get around to it)

I know many of you guys have had years of experience, trying to persuade various agencies to meet your needs, i am a rank amateur. I am only just beginning to realise how slowly these organisations are to affect change.

I had hoped to be moved into a suitable flat with rampable access by now, i don’t currently use a wheelchair but i, like everyone else, wish to be permanently settled. I certainly don’t want to have to move again after this time.

My question is whether getting the bathroom adaption i currently need, will slow down my move to the wheelchair accessible property i will need in the future?

    All the best

    This is an excellent point.

My cousin got a level access shower 18 months ago by providing doctors and O.T. letters to the Housing Association.

Now stairs and other things are more difficult we find she is competing against others on a confusing
scale of people with different priorities. Never put the two together, but you are absolutely right
if she had the bathing problem still she would be higher up the list of priotrities.

I echo your thought that it is important / vital that the next move is the final one and it must be
the right one. This morning I think I have found my perfect “final move”. Big decision for MD people.

Thanks for alerting us on how vital the choice of a disabled friendly home is and these days how
difficult it is to secure that property in the era of cuts with so many people having priority.

You on the move Mr Fox? I hope you are moving somewhere that meets all your requirements.

All housing associations are different i suppose, my one keeps downgrading me from the top of the list, as a greater priority presents itself. Housing is based on need not accruement of points.

In my case, i had no option but to take this less than suitable flat 3 years ago, what with the divorce. I have more or less been trying to get a move since.

I am sure you will keep us abreast of developments Mr Fox.

A coincidence or what? I moaned last Thursday about my requirement for a level access shower, today the housing association sent a plumber round to measure my bathroom up!

I am very pleased indeed. Apart from the problems getting in and out of the bath, there is also the expense. The vast majority of my electricity bill is down to the crappy immersion heater in my flat. The installation of a shower will greatly reduce my bills. :D

I also asked the plumber to note on his estimate, my requirement for the wash basin being raised by at least 6 inches. I made the guy laugh when i likened myself to the Tin Man in “The Wizard of Oz”, when he is in need of oil. I am not in a bad way, but still struggle to bend to wash and shave.

Glad this is all happening. This is swuch a good idea. I really look forward to my new
seated shower. The bath was a awkward trouble fillled necessity.

Talked to my cousin who got one put in my housing association today. They gave her
a flip up seat on the wall that she can use asd an option.

Right on the point as always.

under the old system, my bath used to cost £ 1.10 each.
with the new seated shower a 15 minute shower is £ 0.13.

Every time I am now saving One pound.

This is a good idea all round.

I hope it’s not too long before the builders arrive and put your shower in, Ranald. Having the man in with the measuring stick is a good sign! :D
Let us know when it’s done and we can all celebrate with you!
