August 29, 2012 at 8:30 pm #74527if only – I had to share this
Had physio today with my general physiotherapist whilst I await assessment/review by specialist NMD physio. We had a talk about my progression in recent months and how I am coping with it all. I think mentally I am in a much better place than I was in 2010 and early 2011. I mentioned the last few days that I had been resting as I was feeling poorly and much more weak. He asked me if I thought my weakness was PSYCHOLOGICAL – If only. He then asked me if I had thought of having counselling or similar therapy. I dread to think what he would have thought if he had seen me before when I was angry and frustrated about my condition. I am definiltey much happier and positive now.
If only weakness was in the head!!
I had to tell you this story but I am sure there will be plenty of others with similar experiences.
Best wishes

Hey Gill,
I know how frustrating it is when people say things like that, in work today one of my colleagues said that I need to stop playing on computer and go to gym and that will cure my muscles couldn’t believe it when he said it lol, and he worded it in a really rude way as well!
People are so stupid at times!

Sadly this is all so common and always will happen to a certain extent. People will always fall
back on whatever training they have had believing it to be infallible. We are just the
patients after all. Often feel they think a good guess will be better than our opinion. Had similar
problems in past with Dieticians, SALT’s, Physio and GI people.Thank goodness we live in this era of MDC and MD trained advisors and Physios and the like.

Thank technology we can share these experiences and KNOW it is not in our heads. My parents were of the generation that whatever a medico said was gospel, me, I asked questions, hard ones, uncomfortable ones. I can be mean that way

Love your comments, AMG!
And it’s only after the event that you can think of some really cutting or witty reply the like of which would do Basil Fawlty proud, but at the time, you just sit there dumb-struck!Sybylla

Glad you’re feeling happier and more positive. It never ceases to amaze me how insensitive and thoughtless some people can be. I think they need to walk (so to speak) a day in our shoes.
ValSeptember 12, 2012 at 5:30 pm #86388Re: if only – I had to share thisLatest stupid comment from regular physio is he doesnt know why I am having physio as its not going to change anything and I would be as well not going to see specialist NMD physio [currently awaiting that appt] as they wont be able to do anymore more for me than he is doing. I am taking my chances and going to see specialist anyway. Really hope the appt comes through quickly as I am getting frustrated by his negative and stupid comments!!!
September 12, 2012 at 7:37 pm #86389Re: if only – I had to share thisI think you are doing the right thing. Stick to your guns! I found the specialist physio extremely helpful and the knowledge they have compared to a regular physio is so valuable.

That physio needs a whitty cutting remark – if I can come up with one. That is disgraceful but sadly not unusual, I am always told “Well as there is nothing we can do for you, there is no need to fill your time coming to see us” which translates to ‘get off our list you’re making our stats look bad’.

It’s an entirely stupid comment from a physio, as they surely spend much of their time working with people to keep them as fit as they can be rather than performing miracle cures. Hopefully the specialist should know what they’re doing, and also be at least a tad more intelligent…
September 24, 2012 at 9:09 pm #86392Re: if only – I had to share thisCancelled my general physio appt this week as I wasnt well and had been considering not going back as the comments were grating on me. Happily the very next day my appt with the neuromuscular specialist physio arrived through the post and I am going this week. Will update you on the outcome of that.
Fingers crossed for a better experience and less stupid comments.

October 1, 2012 at 10:09 am #86395Re: if only – I had to share thisHad neuro physio appt. The neuromuscular physio is off on long-term sick leave so saw a neuro-physio who normally works with stroke patients. She was very supportive and is putting me in touch with OT etc to sort out getting me bathroom equipment. Exercise programme in place but currently too sore or weak to do any of them…hopefully later in the week.
She is also going to try and get me neuro physio closer to home. I have neuro appt next week so lots to address. I will hear from physio this week so I know before my clinic appt.
Going to do a seperate post for this reason as would like some thoughts.
Thanks
Gill
