How do I choose the right school for my child?

This is a question that every parent asks themselves. In fact it is probably one of the hardest and most important questions they will ask.

This question holds greater weight when you have a child with muscular dystrophy or a related condition. A whole plethora of issues need to be scrutinised and agonised over, the most common of which being whether or not to send your child to a mainstream school or a special needs school.

What have been the experiences or challenges you have faced when selecting a school for your child?

Currently fighting the LEA to get a place in a specialist special school…what a nightmare. My son has DMD, Asperger’s and ADHD!….not a good combination at all! LEA don’t care that mainstream isn’t right for my son, they just want the cheapest option. It’s going to cost a small fortune getting him in to a specialist school, what with private reports and going to tribunal…around the £20k mark or so! I WILL fight this for the rights of my child but freaking out about where the money comes from to pay for it all!

Hi and welcome to PEN! This is an issue that we are seeing more and more. LEA’s have become increasingly unlikely to place a child in a special needs school. As you point out a lot of the time it comes down to a monetary issue. Does your son have a SEN statement? If so does it have a provision that he has the option to go to a special needs school?

Here at the muscular dystrophy campaign we do have an advocacy case that has dealt with a number of cases similar to yours. We would be happy to have a look at your case and see if we could help!

Haha great to see you on here Annette! Yeah I know! Resolve have a great record when it comes to overturning decisions at tribunal. Hopefully they can work their magic and we can have Joe in Treloars sooner rather than later!

Hi Annette, you probably wont remember me, i chatted with you a long time ago on the old MDC web site i have Tomas who went to Treloar school and is now at the college and doing great. We had a fight to get him in the college even though he went to the school and we thought it would be a natural progression to go on to the college. But like it has been said the CC wanted to save money.
Fortunately we had a great lady at the CC that realised Tomas needed the stability and granted the placement. Keep fighting for what you and your son needs its worth it, Treloars is a great place to be.
    thanks kx

Hiya, yes I do remember you *waves* :)

So glad Tomas got in to the college, what a nightmare tho, I have never felt stress like it. I am sooo not giving this fight up, no way Jose, I’m like a dog with a bone, joe deserves it. Got private EP going to school next week so i really hope she works her magic. Really nervous.

    How are you doing?
