Housing and adaptations!
Hi everyone,
I thought I would kick off some views about housing and adaptations. We are currently trying to find a house that will accommodate for our son with his needs. He is 7 at the moment but growing and it is a battle to carry your child upstairs when your not so big yourself. The problem I am finding is, finding the right location ideally close to family and friends and near a mosque AND large enough to accommodate for my sons growing needs and external family and yet look at affordability and neighbours. It’s incredibly stressful when you only get one chance to consider all of these things as once it’s purchased and adapted, your stuck for life! Thank you for your response, I will certainly look into it !Re: Housing and adaptations!When we were looking for our house, we drew up a list of all the things we really wanted, all the things we didn’t, and a middle column of things we were prepared to compromise on. It focussed our search and we ended up with the right pkace for us.
It’s difficult but I am sure with patience and research you will find your special home!

That sounds like a very good plan and a good outcome!
How about the neighbours though? You need to have good neighbours to have a peaceful life in your own home( there is enough issues we all need to deal with and the last thing you want is to be stuck with that!) and that is a big gamble ;).Re: Housing and adaptations!@anisak wrote:

Unfortunately you can’t really find out what potential neighbours are really like until you move in. However, if you’re house hunting and see that the property next door looks delapidated, the garden is a mess and there are cars on bricks outside, you’d probably want to live elsewhere. It’s worth doing more than one recce to a street at different times of day, and maybe trying to get a feel for the area or chat to people locally (people washing cars, gardening, waiting for the bus, etc) to see what they have to say. If you discover there’s a lot of loud parties during term time, or there are kids playing football in the street every night, that will help you make your mind up! The estate agent should also be honest about an area and tell you of any downsides. Hopefully the area you are aiming for won’t present any problems!
We were lucky with our neighbours on both sides when we moved here. But then one couple moved and a ratbag moved in who was a nuisance. Fortunately he moved after a few years and we’ve been fortunate ever since. Good neighbours are considerate, helpful and friendly.

If you don’t mind me asking sybylla, did you have a through the floor lift fitted in and if yes, have you experienced any difficulties with them?Re: Housing and adaptations!Hi Anisak,
Yes, I had the through floor lift fitted in 2012 when I could no longer get off my wheelchair and onto the stairlift. I am pleased with it but it has not been without its problems. I suggest you do some research before buying and make sure that whatever company you purchase from offers a maintenance/service contract after the warranty has expired. When I bought mine the company called Stannah didn’t offer a through floor lift but they do now. I think I might consider them if I were buying now as I imagine they have a good back up of service engineers.
