Feel weird about carers showering me.

So far, my brother has been taking me to the toilet in the morning and showering me. That’s about to change soon to the carers.

I’m feeling weird about it in terms of privacy for both me and the carer. How did you guys feel about it and how’d you get over the feeling?

    Thanks.

hi and welcome to the forum

up until February 2017 when I hired Care staff for personal care for the first time. my mother and occasionally my sister did my personal care

It is hard starting out, its a complete change to how you normally work. I was very lucky in the first appointed lady to work with me. she completely put me at ease. She is very efficient and we chat throughout. It really comes down to the person you hire and how comfortable you are around them. I’ve had another two girls work for me that I didn’t move to the intimate care tasks, both lovely but I just wasn’t comfortable possibly due to their younger age. now 11 months on have my main lady from start and two ad hoc ladies one of which is a training to be a nurse and another who do my full personal care.

That first time is hard with a new person and I dont think I’m ever going to be completely comfortable and happy with no longer being able to do it myself or my mum helping anytime I wished.

My biggest issue now is the strict set times for washing and time limits on it.

You can also take steps to cover areas to maintain modestly. have clear guideline on how you like things done.

you will very quickly become accustomed to paid carers doing shower time. I find I get complete choice over even the basic things like what shampoo/clothing/ hair style which you dont get 100% of the time with family.

    your very welcome any time.

Do you have a start date for PAs/Carers to start. or are you at the planning stage?

Hi, I too have paid carers/PAs. I have employed my own PAs for 18 years and it does get easier over time. If you have the right people then you will soon get used to it.

Are you going through an agency or employing using direct payments? It is important to feel comfortable with someone who doing personal care tasks and as Catatude said, be able to say how you want things done as well. It’s a question of dignity and you can build this into an induction or even in a job description if you wish.

It will soon become something you don’t even think about. Good luck and don’t forget to come back and tell us how you are getting on with the care transition.
