    Emergency Info

I am in the process of putting together some information in case I was unable to communicate with paramedics or A and E doctors or convey what condition specific issues they need to be aware of.

I’ve got the alert card that MDUK have produced – I have the CMD one – which I keep in my phone case so it always with me. I also have the 12 page care plan document to fill in, it covers things like sleeping position, swallowing difficulties etc. And other crucial information needed if I was to stay in hospital. I am going to keep this in my first aid cupboard along with emergency contact numbers.

The respiratory nurse I saw the other day mentioned she was developing a passport style document for vent users. I am very interested to find out more about this. In my mind, the more I can prepare for such circumstances, the more reassured I will be should they ever arise.

Even if I can talk for myself, I have sometimes encountered a reluctance to listen to what I’m saying or consult my specialists so if it is a formal looking document, who knows it might add more weight and be taken more notice of.

Has anyone else got an alert card or care plan document (it used to be called About Me I believe)?

I still carry my medical alert card and medal which I really need to update as the membership has expired and not sure what access they would provide should they be contacted.

I also carry a card my neuro wrote out with my details and his.

I have received my pack from MD and aim to fill it in soon. I also intend putting a copy of my vent settings in with care pack. Along with ‘caution’ with penicilan, oxygen and anesthetics.

I have one I got from MDUK in my wallet at all times, and I also have my conditions inscribed ona silver bracelet on my wrist. In my car I have a circular emergency info disk wehere the tax disc used to sit so that is gives all the necessary info to emergency repsponders( I can send any one a PDF of this if anyone is interested).
Sadly when I was admitted as an emergency some time ago with a oerfortaed bowel no one looked at them. When i asked my wife to tell the doctor I had MD they asked her what that was! At that point I got her to carry me to the car and take me to another hospital as I knew then I would not survive staying there.
I know some people who have their conditions tattooed on their chest so it can be easily seen, along with DNAR if that is the case.

Thanks for posting this valuable information.

I have found even for a minor operation the anesthetic people
get very worried about any neuromuscular issues. Make
sure you inform them well in advance. Five minutes
before having general anaesthetic they had a panic
once and went with an epidural admitting they
did not fully understand and would not take a risk.
