    Diabetes

I’m a bit upset because I have just been diagnosed with diabetes. This is a bit of a blow because I thought my diet was pretty good and I don’t drink (because of MD) or smoke. Although I could do with loosing a bit of weight I didn’t think I was a candidate for diabetes although my Mum had it so it is probably not surprising. Anyway now I have to go for 3 “education sessions”, & what’s the betting they have never heard of MD, so I think I will take them some info.I am hoping I can control it with food but I think I will have to take blood pressure tablets and maybe something for cholesterol. This is really worrying because I hate putting chemical into my body and I am really scared of the side effects. My body is bad enough without tablets making it worse!!

Does anyone else have these problems and how do you cope with it? I would be glad of any advice anyone can give.

    Thanks
    Val

So sorry to hear your news. You may not want to answer this question on a public forum and I am trying to find a delicate way to put it – is it possibly age related? I tend to forget my years are clockig by and there could be early signs of age affecting me.

Taungfox brough up an enlightening responce on another thread Notes from the Hospy with an exlanation about magnesium. It might be worth while bringing that up at your ‘education sessions’ [although as you hinted, you may well be educating them too].

I sometimes wish I could go somewhere and be tested so they could tell me “you’re abit low on this mineral and that vitamin, but this and this is fine”, but it wouldn’t happen that way.

Are you in contact with a Regional Care Advisor? They are a mine of wonderful information, advise and support with indepth MD knowledge – Locate a RCA

Thanks for your reply AMG. You are right it could be age related as I am in my early fifties but my body thinks it’s about 80!! My Mum was diabetic so I suppose it was inevitable really and I could do with losing a bit of weight. It’s just something else to deal with and food was about the one pleasure I had left and now that’s a problem too. GRRRRRR

I emailed my Care Advisor and I was very impressed when she phoned about 20 mins later. She’s gonna contact my consultant for me for some info and she is coming to visit me next week. I don’t feel quite so bad about it now it’s starting to sink in but it’s a bit scarey.. It’ll be interesting at the sessions what they make of me. I’ve got a feeling that I be a thorn in their sides! I’ll let you know how I get on.
