    Christmas Spirit

I have just been to watch my granddaughter’s and grandson’s Christmas play. We got there a little early to ensure we could get a space. Knocked on the door asking if we could come in to keep me warm. “one moment I will go and ask” said the woman who answered. A few minutes later. ” No you cannot come in, the wheelchair (I was in a mobility scooter) is a safety hazard, you will have to wait until we open”.
Fifteen minutes later the door opens. “You can come in now, sit where you want. The one in the wheelchair (waving one hand in my direction) will have to sit at the back to keep the children safe.” So I sat at the back in my wheels. My wife and daughter sat at the front. They had a really good view of the children, I saw nothing from the back, as, you have guessed it, everyone stood up to watch their little ones and take pictures.
This is the second time in as many weeks that this has occurred to me. It has also occurred to me that we are not making any progress if disabled people are still being treated in this way, and no one notices.

So many love songs, so little love.

That’s awful to hear. Could they not have moved some chairs for you, so that the seating is still taking up the same amount of space? Was the play at their school? I might be tempted to send a letter or phone them, because it sounds like there would’ve been reasonable adaptations they could’ve made to accommodate your chair…

There was in fact a great deal of room and unoccupied chairs, but I was classed as a safety risk to the children and I had to go to the back. It was the playgroup’s owner that said these things to me. So it wasn’t making arrangements to help a disabled person it was making the children safe from a disabled person on wheels. Even more annoying was she did not have the decency to speak to me directly she was speaking to my wife and daughter and simply waved her hand at me. Even now, I am still livid about the whole event.

Wow! That is not good. I had an issue with a theatre trip recently that I’m still narked about.

I have been to my nephew’s Christmas play twice and I am put at the front on the end. There was no problem with H&S. I could see, everyone else could see as I was at the end of the row. And I was let in first to get in out of the cold. Sorry this wasn’t your experience.

Health and safety sounds like codswallop to me.

I always had good experience with or little peoples nursery and school. To point I got extra special treatment. I was assigned my own mini helper to navigate the school to get around accessible route. Only thing which I didn’t mind was in order to use the Schools Disabled spot I had to arrive 30 min before and hang around 30 min after as they close the gates when kids are arriving and leaving school.

It really doesn’t say much for this business. Im assuming its not a council run nursery.

I believe it is not a Council run scheme, one where they just rent the place. No disabled parking spot though but plenty of parking next to. I do totally agree that health and safety was rubbish, but still I do hear lots of rubbish on a daily basis.
Lots of different approaches by folk here, but does still show that disabled people still have a bit of a mountain to climb. I used to dread going to such things. Mostly because you spent an hour on tiny seats with your knees up your nose. A small advantage of being disabled, I can bring my own seat now. If only I can be let in.
    Soon be Easter!
