    Cheap Sky For Christmas !

Looking to tighten our belts at every turn I’ve been reexamining all the bills. My one decadence I’ve always allowed myself is Sky TV. I’m a mad Spurs supporter & as such I can’t afford to go to the pub to watch them & certainly can’t afford to go to Whate Hart Lane to see them live.

However, I had to reduce the package down some time ago as we’re struggling so no movies or sports package for some time. Until I discovered these little Now TV boxes. I’ve just been buying them & ditching them, just using the codes that come with a new box & it’s cheaper than paying Sky a premium monthly.

The good news is, Sky have reduced all their old white ones (they broadcast in 720p only, not full 1080p HD) & now’s the time to stock up before Christmas for cheap TV.

You do have to have a really good internet package though to make the most of them otherwise they buffer because they connect to your wifi & not via an aerial or dish ;-) http://www.tesco.com/direct/search-results/results.page?pageViewType=grid&sortBy=3&searchquery=NOW+TV+HD&SrchId=4294967294&catId=4294967294&sc_cmp=tp4_aff_1018132.

You can upgrade any TV in your house with one of these little babies. Right now three white boxes would mean you will get Sky Movies for six months for £30 ! Have that Murdoch :neener:

“Get the most from your home entertainment system with this NOW TV pack with a Sky Movies 2 Month Pass. The NOW TV Box is a digital media entertainment unit that gives you access to a variety of comprehensive and flexible features.

Stream content to your TV in high quality and watch all of your favourite live channels. Enjoy a wide selection of catch-up TV including Sky News, BBC iPlayer, BBC News App, Demand 5 and many more. You will also be able to access a wide range of apps like Spotify & Facebook straightaway, with more being added all the time (some apps may cost extra).

The Sky Movies Pass included in this package gives you unlimited access to the latest movies on Sky Movies channels for 2 months, no contract. Enjoy all the films you missed at the cinema and all the movies that you want to watch, again and again. You can also watch 10 amazing channels without a contract.

To use the NOW TV Box you need to have a NOW TV account, Wi-Fi and a HDMI connection (HDMI cable supplied). For TV’s without a HDMI port, you can connect your NOW TV to your TV using an AV cable.”

PS I think these vouchers can be activated to watch on your PC or via your games consoles & tablets.

Am I anywhere near post 1,000 yet

Ah, easy. You need a PVR & I would suggest getting a Humax. They have freeview tuners built in, maybe even Freeview HD & also have their own internal hard drives to record, pause, rewind & store programmes on. They will be able to connect to the router to update & also access iplayer, ITV player & 4OD.

Me Brother’s got the 1tb model & loves it but, his was the What Hifi award winner a few years ago & a lot of money. I’ll search for the best model & also an alternative, so you have a choice, if you wish mate ?

Oh cool, I’ve seen on the freview play website and saw a humax jobbie, I cannot find out whether it is connected to the t’internet via cable only, or do I need to get a dongle to make it wireless (if so, how much is that), or does this box of tricks have its own widget for finding my wifi.

We’ve got my mate’s boy here at the moment. I’ll have a little research & post the best deals on a Panasonic & a Humax in a few hours, just for you ;-). And I’ll try to find one that connects to your wifi. As long as you’ve got decent internet it’s best to go wifi as you won’t have cables everywhere & can place it where you wish.

This Panasonic connects via a dongle which is available at an additional cost of anything between £50-£70 or ethernet cable.

Panasonic DMR-HWT130EB 500Gb HDD Twin Freeview HD+ Tuners Wireless LAN Ready http://www.electricaldiscountuk.co.uk//store/p/tvblu-ray-homecinema/settopboxes/freeview/panasonic-dmrhwt130eb/?awc=1311_1445978458_1286cd23b9bba382058728979a3a0191

    http://www.conrad-electronic.co.uk/ce/en/product/393464/-DY-WL5E-K?insert=EG&awc=5769_1445978565_3249bea2fcffcc43bc50d12228ee4cc0&utm_source=affiliate_aw&utm_medium=global_aw&utm_campaign=global&utm_banner=global&WT.mc=affiliate_aw_global

But, I’d recommend getting this instead http://www.cheapelectricals.co.uk/Item/panasonic-dmr-hwt150eb-smart-500gb-hdd-recorder

Bit more expensive but, no dongle, wifi & freeview play built in (it means you can scroll back over the TV guide from the past seven days & choose what to watch).

Or this Humax. The spec on this is equally as impressive & it can’t be bought anywhere cheaper than the manufacturers site so I’d go straight there. This model has built in wifi, freeview play & is available in a couple of different colours.

    http://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/freeview.html?internet=239

All have 500gb internal hd’s & freeview hd ;-). They cost a pretty penny as well I’m afraid. And you can get higher spec models with blu ray/dvd players built in. Whilst this may free you of a box under your TV it also means if one component ceases to function the whole unit is lost & three sources to your TV in one swoop.

And bear in mind, anything you buy today could well be heavily reduced come December 26th. It may be worth waiting for ;-). Try places like Richer Sounds http://www.richersounds.com/products/home-cinema/home-cinema-separates/digital-set-top-boxes#1 & this search engine http://pricespy.co.uk/

Re: Cheap Sky For Christmas !

I had a moment of clarity last night & remembered I didn’t check if any of these do series link & can’t find confirmation either.

So, after reading about them both, the Panasonic & the Humax, my recommendation would be to go for the 1tb version of the Humax which is £220 but, I’ve set up an email alert for a price drop via pricespy.co.uk & will let you know of any developments.

In the meantime, I’ve just emailed Humax support to find out about the series link function. It would be hard to imagine they’ve missed that function off. With this new Freeview Play EPG they seem to have evolved to incorporate the on demand services of: All 4, BBC iPlayer, Demand 5, ITV Player

The Humax also incorporates VOD (Video On Demand) apps such as Netflix & Youtube.

“Watch live TV, catch up with your favourites or record; with the Freeview Play-equipped Humax FVP4000T you can do it all with ease.

    Freeview Play makes it easy
Freeview Play takes Freeview HD to the next level by offering easy to access, catch-up TV. You also get all the other great benefits of Freeview. With over 60 subscription-free channels and 12 HD channels available, there’s always something to watch with Freeview TV.

The next step – scroll-back TV
Connect the Humax to your Internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet and you can enhance your TV viewing with effortless catch-up TV. Catching up on programmes you’ve missed is easy – simply use the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) to ‘scroll’ back on the last seven days TV programmes. With support for BBC iPlayer, ITV Player and All 4 the great majority of the last seven day’s worth of TV are just a scroll away.

Record, pause and rewind live TV
Featuring a large 1TB hard drive, it’s easy to record, pause and rewind live TV. The large capacity storage holds up to 600 hours of standard TV or 300 hours of HDTV – enough to be able to catch up on all your favourite TV even after a long break away. With the pause and rewind function, interruptions from phone calls are no longer an issue – simply pause the live TV and resume when you’re free again.

Remote programming and recording via app
Available for both Apple iOS and Android smartphones, the dedicated Humax app lets you take control of programming and recording from your Humax box, wherever you are! Once paired with your device you can remotely select which programmes you want to record and, with a display that replicates the TV menu, it’s easy to programme – especially on a tablet.

Get more from your TV – subscription free – with the Freeview Play Humax FVP4000T 1TB.”

I’ll edit this post to update it once I’ve heard back from Humax support ;-).

 Wow, loads of useful info to get to grips with there. I was thinking of buying just after Christmas as the prices might go lower, if I decide to get one or wait a little longer as there is £??!&@ worth watching on any service these days (unless it is my age showing).

Awesome huge thanks to you for finding that info for me. I’d plant a kiss on your cheek but Mrs Woogy might need to give permission first :D
