I have a profiling bed so I make it go as low as it can, get the wheelchair alongside, heave myself from chair to bed then lean backwards and lift/swing legs on, supporting my upper body with my arms. Can’t do this manoever with any bed that’s higher than my wheelchair though. Getting in and out of bed is a bit of a work-out every day!

So much depends on what control or strength you have in your legs or pelvic areas, if I get into a bed on the left side thats fine, cannot do a right hand side I get all back to front one leg on one leg dangling.

Sorry to hear of your struggle. I could not get up off the loo the other night, my own fault, should have gone earlier when less tired.

I have started pregailin, volteral for back pain. do you think this would effect leg height lifting etc.

I have a slidy transfer board thingy, would something like that make the thing any easier? Hmm, the leg lift, hmm, dunno an easy way to get legs up inthe air [unless its unintentional as you fall somewhere they they quickly fly upwards!]

LOL Vicki, I sat there cross legged [not worked out why that improves things] for a while, did a bit of tidying of the bathroom crap then tried again and managed it on fourth attempt.

Lawdy, I sympathise with this difficulty. I normally sit on the side of the bed, with my feet on the floor. I get there either by being hoisted or side transferring from the wheelchair using a sliding board. So far so good.

But the problem is then getting legs from floor to bed. I grab hold of my right leg, and as I flop sideways to a lying position I can normally pull / throw that leg onto the bed. But getting the left leg up there too is another matter. Sometimes I can grab and yank that one too, sometimes it just doesn’t work. This can take several attempts, and a lot of sitting up and flopping down and trying again. And eventually waiting for assistance. I suppose it has benefits: Who needs a gym membership after that workout?

One of my care assistants just told me that she’s cancelled her gym membership, as putting on my stockings in the morning gives her all the workout she needs. I am obviously providing a public service in improving the fitness of the nation…
