I can’t drink alcohol either. I get a really bad reaction even if I have a little sip so I don’t even try now. It is sooo annoying. A nice glass of chilled white wine would go down lovely at the end of the week.

I am exactly the same. Never thought of asking on the forum if other mD people have the same.

I don’t have any problem 8-) I prefer spirits to wine or beer/larger, trouble is drinking through a straw gets you drunk quicker!

Yes it certainly seems to! I am able to drink less than I did in my twenties. I went on a girlie holiday to Spain and would drink a couple of spirits, a few cocktails and shots in the same night – I am content with just the one now! I have noticed recently that the next day my stomach is not great and although it hasn’t put me off yet, I can see it may do in the future. I prefer spirits to wine as well.

Many thanks to AMG for the magnificent split.

Just like Valerie I get a totally bad reaction to alcohol. since the 4th July 1980 I have not
    touched a single drop.

In my early 20’s I worked in exports and there seemed to be unlimited amounts of free booze. To
my horror I felt terrible way before I ever had the chance to get anywhere neaqr drunk.

Now even the smell of alcohol is something to be avoided. Just like my total aversion to some foods. I
have never in my life ate a tomato, apricot, prune etc….No idea of relevance.

yes to alcohol but not in massive quantities and no daring gymnastic maneuvers.

    What about second breakfast?

Not feeling too bad surprisingly, i was drinking Vodka instead of beer. Perhaps i will keep off the beer and see if that works every time. ;)

I am not altogether sure why me and booze are not well acquainted. Maybe it is because I did not come from a family of drinkers, the pub was not somewhere that I went, I don’t particuarly like the taste, and one drink alway made me feel like all my limbs were not communicating centrally, it made my face burn and just upset my insides.

I don’t drink any alcohol now. I used to enjoy a glass of wine sometimes [fizzy lambrusco for example] but after a long period of abstainance due to medication, when I had my first glass of bubbly, I couldn’t finish it and the smell put me off. I still like a little glass of sweet sherry now and again [oooh, what a devil I am!] but I can’t remember the last time I had one. I guess it’s because [like AMG] I come from a family who never frequented the local hostelry and only drank for special occasions. I don’t miss it and never think about it.

You non-drinkers are lucky, it is my only pleasure and i am kind of in it’s thrall. If i didn’t drink i wouldn’t see a soul, it is a social thing as well as an addiction.

TBH, it is the one remaining link to my past life, i wish i had other occupations for my time.

More than 500 years of drinking? That’s longer than even I’ve managed. Impressive, ranald. ;)

I was talking to a friend who also has MD about the effects of alcohol a while ago. She was saying that as the disease has progressed, there have been times when after a drink or two she’s sort of forgotten that some things that she used to be able to do she can’t do any longer, and been and gone and actually done them. (This has been my experience in the past too.) I’m not sure it’s a recommended treatment, however, as there’s always the potential for injury when willpower and the effects of the booze don’t persuade the failing muscles to work like they used to…

I definitely wouldn’t manage to climb even one stair, with or without a drink.

Nothing to do with this thread but i was struck by my mum’s recovery from a hip replacement a few weeks ago. She came out of hospital on two sticks, hardly able to move, but can now walk up and down the internal stairs in her house with only a slight limp.

It is annoying to watch a regular illness or disablement heal so quickly, it’s a pity a few weeks rest couldn’t cure MD.

I like to have the odd drink but I feel so much weaker the day after, and just a small amount of alcohol seems to make me more likely to misjudge a step resulting in a fall

I definitely dont think my symptoms are made worse by drinking although on occasion when I have had to much I do blame my weakness as the reason my legs are not working….oops

I’m with Ranald on this one. Drinking is good for us. I enjoy a Jack Daniels. I get drunk but don’t have any more difficulty doing anything than when I’m sober. It is fun and if ya feel rough the next day, that means you had a good night.

    I say Alcohol – YES.
