    After school activities

    Hi everyone :D
I was wondering if anyone could help me. I am having real trouble trying to find after school activities for my son.Ill give you a little bit of background information incase it helps :D My son is 7 years old and attends a mainstream school. He has Limb Girdle Muscular dystrophy. He can walk for small amounts of time and uses a wheelchair for long distances he struggles to get off the floor and can not walk flat footed. As my son attends a mainstreams school they pack his book bag with leaflets weekly with after school clubs and activities, all of which are unsuitable for him. He has told me he wants to try horse riding, I have tried to contact RDA and my 15 most local groups have a waiting list of at least 4 years and others wont take him as they dont understand his ‘needs’. He also likes swimming but as he can not lift his arms over his head again he cant join the swimming club. In addition to this many groups and activities I have contacted that are for disabled children wont let him attend as he does not have a statment. Basically what I am asking for is does anyone know what kind of group or club I can get him in without him feeling odd or different :( I wish he could just feel like he belongs somewhere
    Any Help appreciated
    :D

    Hi

I am just trying to think what sort of clubs I did at school – I played the recorder so I know I did that one and I also went to the drama club and I think sewing? When you say unsuitable, do you mean too physical activities or things that don’t interest your son or is it that the school deem them as unsuitable for him?

What does your son enjoy doing/would he like to learn? Others may have more suggestions, I enjoyed the social side of after school activities with my peers, I hope that you can find something.

Would it be possible for the school run swimming programme to have an extra member of staff in the pool purely for him? It’s something I had and it’s a bit of a luxury. He doesnt have to do full lengths or push himself too hard to keep up and there’s a pair of eyes near him that will give him the space to interact with others while keeping him safe. It does depend on the person with him – you dont want a mollycoddler, counter productive. At the end of the day you want a level playing field and the exercise will help long term, you’re within your right to ask for this, the school might not have thought of something like that as being something he’d be interested in.

    What about second breakfast?

Thank you for your replies! The extra person for swimming is a brill idea as he absolutly loves swimming :) I have also been told of a local lake sailing club which sounds awesome and is relatively cheap also! :)
