Off Road 4×4 Wheelchair with Accessible Activity Company

While on hoilday in Mallorca I discovered a company that specializes in inclusive accessible sports and activities for both disabled tourist and residents. http://www.handisportmallorca.org

By the time I discovered them, I only had a few days left but the lovely organizer managed to squeeze me on a Mountain Trek on a 4×4 wheelchair in Galatzo hills, some of the highest on the island. Each trek is adapted to ability. My mum did the trek but couldn’t drive chair so the instructor walked beside to control her vehicle, while I zoomed away up boulders full pelt in total comfort and safety. The chair is super adjustable and zero chance of falling out and very minimal effect from road surface as the chair itself keeps the rider at perfect pre set angle no matter how steep or uneven you have driven the 4×4 over rough terrain. Getting on took very little effort. the chair slides forward right to front edge. In my case the lovely gents carefully lifted me across.

It was the most alive I have felt in years as I was able to participate in something fun for once with no barriers and an activity I could have done with up to four friends or family members as they have 4 of the 44 of these fab vehicles in the world.

    Hiking/4×4
The German made Otto Bock Superfour vehicles have total traction, power steering, protective cabin bars and independent suspension. By pushing a button, the seating unit automatically slides towards the front axis, which facilitates boarding. The vehicles can handle inclines of up to 40% and have an oscillating seat that ensures totally safe ascents and descents. They also have Hippocampe chairs.

Excursions take place on a 14-million-square-metre publically-owned rural property in Galatzó, which is located in the municipality of Calviá. There are four different itineraries: Sa Vinya (low difficulty level – approx. 2 hours, 23 minutes), Ses Sínies (low difficulty level – approx. 2 hours, 15 minutes ), Ses Planas (medium difficulty level ? approx. 2 hours) and S?Esclop (medium/high difficulty level – approx. 4 and a half hours)

They do a whole range of other activities, all designed to be inclusive for wheelchair users and is well worth looking at if you are in the area. Transfer service is available from your hotel.

    Riding Therapy
    4×4 trek
Blokart (adapted windsurfing on land on specialist vehicle)
Golf with a sit to stand all terrain golf chair
    Water skiing for wheelchair users
    Canoeing
    Sailing
    Diving in sea or pool

Activities can also be seen on http://www.disabilityholidaysguide.com/fundacion-handisport.aspx
as well as the companies own pages http://www.handisportmallorca.org/

Tha looks really birlliant. I have just bought some new wheels to go off road, but mine were for going off footpath (coz of cars parked on teh footpaths) and on to grass paths in our village. SOmething like this would be well beyond my budget, but it must have been a really amazing experience for you to use one.
Thank you so much for sharing.

Calvert Trust is highly recommended. In Rotary we use them for sneding candidates from schools for training. IF you watch the video of someone in a wheelchair absailing down a cliff face. Says it all.

PS The wheels were £500 from Mr Ebay
