I just thought I would promote the Access to Work Scheme in the hope that it will be of some use to someone. An ad in the MD mag would be helpful as people don’t know about it or how much it can help. As I’ve said before the Access to Work scheme supplied a super rising power chair for my work and an adaption for the WC but most recently I applied for wheelchair accessible taxi travel to work and this was granted and I only have to pay 25p a mile.
This has only been the first week and already I am enjoying the benefits. It was getting really dangerous and near impossible for me to get out my car and need to be helped out with is not really safe of dignified to have to really on colleagues at work today. myself and my helper near feel on black ice last week. now I simply drive into taxi and zoom into work and transfer into work chair. no longer having to ask for help. getting a taxi was difficult we found 8 different local cab firms but they are all book up on school runs. I did get one who cant get me at 8.15 which will get me into work in time. It does tie me more as I don’t have the freedom of my car sitting at the front door and nor many accessible taxi’s available and at times to suit. And the stress of bad weather has been lifted and I wont need to keep annual leave days to cover iffy weather. I still need to struggle to self transfer from home chair to work chair but its safer than doing it outs side from car to chair on black ice.

I used it in 2002 and am delighted that it is still going.
It provides funds to assist people to work where they might not be able to otherwise.

You are so right that people should be made aware of this scheme. I am amazed that they
have not tried to abolish it yet. Apply, apply, apply.I applied in 2001 and the DWP spent £450 per hour sending consultants to my proposed
workplace. They came up with a wonderful plan for a custom built workstation, speech
recognition software and an R4 lumbar support chair. I was awarded a Grant of £ 1584 and
I paid £ 700 myself to add to it.Great scheme, go for while it is still there. Google “Access To Work”.
PostScript, the day before I was about to start work the Employer said I had a progressive disease
and might get worse and I must sign a “Letter of Indemnity” protecting them from any loss or expense. GP
said I must not sign it, all monies wasted.Good scheme though.
