    Tips for Sleep Study please

Well, some 8 months after being given my vent I’ve got my first sleep study – it’s at the Brompton next week.

So – anyone got any top tips on the experience – not sure what to expect really as I’ve only done home monitoring on gizmos.

    Cheers :-)

I did a quick site search and there are a couple of threads that might be of interest Sleep Study Experiences

Concensus seems to be take snaks, ipod, book, entertainment gizmos, extra cushions and pillows maybe and your carer … kitchen sink optional

    Hi ya criptic

I have done quite a few, will you be in one of the sleep labs do you know?

I find ipod/radio and earphones are a must. Also, make sure the cable is in properly on the sleep study machine. During my sleep study last year the alarm went off warning that the battery back up was about to run out – on closer inspection the cable was the cause but it disrupted my sleep unnecessarily.

Have you been asked about beds? Do you require an air mattress for example?

One of the technicians starts off the study, sometime after 8pm. In the sleep labs you get your own tv so that helps if you don’t want to sleep that early. Last time I just had one probe attached to my ear lobe.

Hope it goes well, safe journey up there.

Cheers – I have no idea if it’s in a sleep lab – i saw some kind of room when exploring last time I was there which I think had a shhh – sleep study sign but they didn’t have a tv -just a small room with a bed and a shower closet next to it. It never actually said where to go! I e-mailed all the details (they lost my original mailed one) and they said they will arrange a pressure care mattress and hubs will stay with me.

We did think it may be boring – thank goodness for iPhones! Would take our iPad but traveling through London (first time without PA helping) is scary without carrying valuables.

I’m hoping there is somewhere accessible where I can put my head in the sink to hair wash! Some of their ‘accessible bathrooms’ are a little tricky – you know what it’s like when your out of your home tailored environment – so fingers crossed. Hubs is fretting already as I’m having bad nights at the moment to boot.

Are there different locations where they do the study at the Brompton? I hope we are aren’t going all out just for a few probes I could have done at home lol. I got so tangled up in wires for the home study though!

Thanks – will pack the kitchen sink ;-)

I think as your hubby is staying with you then you sill have a sleep lab room. My carer slept on a camp bed next to me. There is a bathroom that is shared by two rooms. It has a sink toilet and shower but I couldn’t use it for toileting as it didn’t have a bar next to it. Can’t remember where but there are disabled loos somewhere.

Oh and the food is great!

Gosh, Brompton sounds a lot better than Papworth (where I had a pretty horrible time on my sleep study).

Good luck… hope it goes well for you.

My sleep studies are done at Papworth. I’ve had one bad experience and that was due to an auxiliary nurse  I take a PA/carer too and we go out for dinner as Papworth’s food is shocking. On the hair washing front have you tried dry shampoo, I’ve used it and it works a treat.
