The dog that might help find new Duchenne treatment

Scientists from the University of Sao Paolo in Brazil have found that two dogs in their colony of golden retrievers with muscular dystrophy have unusually mild symptoms. The dogs carry a mutation in a gene that is equivalent to the human dystrophin gene and are an excellent animal model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The scientists hope that understanding why these two dogs did not develop the typically severe features of this condition might open the door for the development of new treatment approaches for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

I saw, quite some time ago, that Doctors had been treating a dog with muscle wasting condition. I think it’s this story…

    Hi Woogy,

Yes they have been using a dog model of Duchenne for a while now. It more closely resembles the symptoms than the mouse model so is very useful for research. Very expensive though so they are usually saved for testing treatments after they have been thoroughly tested in the lab and in mice.

    Best wishes,
    Kristina.
