    Spammers on the Starboard Bow….?….

Are we aware that today alone we have had over 200 new members
singing up to the forum, and they all seem to be in a similar format?

    Large numbers yesterday too !

Over 250 new members yesterday and over 100 by 10 AM today.

Either we have the biggest outbreak of MD in the history of the world
or there is something nefarious going on.

Taung – Because of the MDC oving offices, their servers are down and it appears that those are the ones which do most of th spam blatting … just goes to show how much we peeps behind the scenes do to keep this place clean and tidy.

Normal service shuld be resumed once the peeps are all plugged back in again. At least the ove did not shut down the board completely.

Vicki and AMG to the rescue.

It was just horrible. At one stage there were over twenty of them online with me. I felt like
King Canute! They all had nine letter, weird double-dutchy names.

Thanks for the explanation, I thought someone had left the backdoor open.

    Wow.

Over 800 new spammy members in less than two days.

But a big thank you to the mods and admin as they have obviously done
something very clever which stops these miscreants posting their normal
    mayhem.

……and they are all gone !!!!

Jenna has arrived like the Seventh Cavalry and worked for hours zapping the
    intruders.

    Thank You !!!!

I wish it was just clicking…sifting through IPs, usernames, addresses, hosts, changing counterspam settings – you name it. My fingers do hurt though and you’re right it is very tedious lol!

Sorry I appear online and I am not talking guys…just trying to put a stop to this.

One very small problem…….we have accidentally zapped our newest member Nathan who we have
been chatting to in “Say Hello” section.

Can we get him back ?

Re: Spammers on the Starboard Bow….?….

The message I sent out to mods 10 minutes ago:

Of all the risks of pruning spam accounts, one genuine member has been caught in the net and their account deleted:

    Username: Nathan

I see that he was a new member too, so I am super sorry that this has happened. He was just one genuine member of the 878 spam accounts deleted and although I tried my best to sift through most of those individually, checking all forename usernames, he has been caught in. I cannot reactivate his account, nor do I have access to his email.

I am 99.9% certain that he is the only one, I have rechecked to see if anyone else was caught in and there appears to be no other instance. The cull was dated back to the 28th May, and although I did check for genuine members (as mentioned before), it is just unlucky.

I will check on the spam onslaught and monitor the forum closely throughout the rest of this weekend and into next week. I can also assure that the genuine member deletion will not happen again. It will be easily avoided this time because there won’t be nearly 1000 accounts to deal with.

If he gets back in touch with anyone, do let me know – I’ll do my best to ensure his experience on the forum is resumed.

    J

    _____

I have no contact details for him – the only thing I can do is leave him a message up on the boards and hope he sees.

    Thanks for explaining.

Sorry to raise it. Poor Nathan is the only collateral damage in the magnificent
greater good that Jenna has done.

Leave a few messages for Nathan to re-register.

I’m on it now. Don’t be sorry for raising it – you’re quite right to…you’d make a great mod, you’re super quick on the observational side of foruming!
