    Sheets and nightwear

I’ve looked into many answers to the problems of moving about in bed, as it’s getting more and more difficult for me to do so without substantial assistance. I don’t feel I’m ready for (or can afford) a turning bed yet.

So I’m wondering whether it might be a help to try to find sheets and duvet covers that are less resistant to movement: of a more “shiny” material perhaps. The only “shiny” sheets I’ve managed to locate recently were available in leopard print or black only, and I’m afraid I’m past the age where having leopard print bedding seems a good idea!

Same goes for nightwear, something with less resistance could be helpful. But without opting for a silky nightie (which despite the obvious temptations probably wouldn’t suit a bloke like me and besides would make my morning carers laugh too much), I haven’t succeeded in finding anything suitable.

The qualifications are that I don’t want anything too slippery that might make me slide out of bed inadvertently. And nylon’s no good as it brings my skin up.

Any ideas of possible sources will be gratefully received…

Peter, this might be too slippery but I have a slide sheet underneath me which helps me move a bit better at night as well as helps my carers move me up the pillow a bit more.

Thanks, sar, I’ve used a slide sheet in hospital but as you say I think it would be too slippery for use at home…

I only really have bottom on the slip sheet due my contractures and scoliosis and the range of cushions under my knees and feet so I am able to wiggle my bottom but use my feet to anchor myself and stop myself slipping one way or t’other too much.

You can get silk type pj bottoms for men (and I assume tops) but I think they’re quite expensive. Would you want a long sleeve top though because for all the “slippery-ness” I’d need to be able to stop myself (with my elbows) should I be sliding too far. Only alternative I can think of is to get a kimono and sleep on (or in) that until you find something more suitable?

    What about second breakfast?

I wear satin pj’s as on cotton sheets they slide well, I have tried silk but found them to stick to cotton. The only thing is satin pj’s are often hard to find so i tend to buy them when i see them.

I tend to go with the Maralyn Monroe method … but I cannot afford Channel No5

Yes, ideally long sleeves, which can be rolled up when necessary. I tend to prefer long sleeves (and legs), because it can be useful to grab and yank them to help move limbs that have decided they don’t want to go anywhere on their own.

I think what I’m thinking of is probably, as Vicki suggests, something satiny. Though I haven’t yet found a source of satin pyjamas for blokes.

    Interesting night-time cross-dressing possibilities arise…

a net shop called 24studio.co.uk has nice girly satan pjs. I dont do well with satin/silky. makes me sweat then get cold. also find the lack of fabric give a problem as it can become too tight and cut into skin.

what i have done in the past is butcher a satin comforter so that there is a double satin slidy strip under my bum. about 10 inch wide and then tuck tight into either side of the mattress,

Sort of like a satin runner but on the sheet rather than the bed. Interesting idea.

petered – satin sheets ;) ;) ;) [might need an electric blanket beneath to warm em up first]

I used to have satin night shirt with cotton fleece lining, button down front. Never seen any since the 1990’s though lol. I have a satin Japanese scarf which is wide like table runner which I use under me sometimes – but it’s very very slippy.

Satin sheets might be too shiny but there are loads of satin and silk ones (plus mixes) if you google them with normal colours and finishes. Personally satin on cotton is what I used when I could move a bit but I guess it’s all a bit of an experiment to find something that works.

I always wear real silk pyjamas. Yes, they are expensive (between £50-£150 per pair) but I don’t have many luxuries and this is one of them. Slippery and warm! I’m also planning to get some silk sheets. Or I might get a silk duvet cover and sleep on top of a duvet – to give me comfort and slideyness.

    Hello Petered,

This is my first time on Talk MD. I’ve had MD for a long while and thought I’d look in on the forum. I think I can offer some advice regarding your problem with sheets and nightwear. I’ve just been on ebay and typed in “satin sheets” and “mens satin pajamas.” There’s a lot of choice for both and they are nowhere near as expensive as real silk. Also, you don’t have to opt for the leopard print variety!

I would never go with something called satin that is not real silk as this is generally 100% polyester which I find very sweaty and uncomfortable. For me it is worth paying for the real thing. But – everyone is different so if it works for you then go for it.

You’ve got to have some luxuries and sleeping in something luxury is great as most of us spend a third of the day in bed.

    Hello friends,

Just thought I’d let you know my solution to moving about in bed. I’ve been wearing satin-type nighties for years, but lately the cotton flat sheets have made it hard for me to move my legs [specially as I have to wear socks to keep my feet warm]. I went on ebay but the satin-type sheets I was after only came as part of a bed set [duvet cover, pillow cases & sheets] and I don’t need more duvet covers. So I found the fabric [also on ebay] bought 3 meters of 150cm wide silky satin in a deep cream colour and all I’ve needed to do is hem it all round. It makes it so much easier to get in bed and move around. OK, so it’s not real silk or satin but it looks nice and feels lovely! And the total cost was £6.75 and an hour or so with the sewing machine! I’ll be making another one later today.
