Remote control for plugs and gas fires

I’ve been struggling lately with turning the gas fire on, as it’s difficult to stand there, push the control knob down, turn it, and hold it, without running the risk of toppling over. And, for some bizarre reason (possibly connected to not being able to get back up) falling down is not one of my favourite things to do! I’m getting a halogen heater to keep me going in the meantime, but a friend of mine mentioned a gas fire remote control. They have to be fitted by a qualified gas engineer, so I’ll have to ask my housing association about one, but has anyone used one and is it any good?

My friend also mentioned remote control devices for electric sockets. You plug it into the wall socket, then plug your electric plug into it, and use a remote control to turn it on or off. It means you no longer have to be able to reach the wall sockets. I’m definitely getting a set of them when I can afford them. I just thought that other people might like to hear about them too. :D

Yes, very good point these are very useful.

Bought a set of three from ASDA for about £ 20.

Also there was an offer of a free “LIME” one on the internet. Not sure
    if it still available.

Superb to just sit on aofa and turn a whole series of appliances off
at the touch of one button.

    Thanks

Nifty – question, am I right in assuming that the socket has to be unblocked by furniture and curtains etc to receive the remote signal? All my buggers are in corners and behind stuff.

    Nifty gadget though.

As always AMG is right on the point.

The inra-red part of it needs a direct line of sight thingy to work properly.

The one you cannot get anymore, the free Lime socket has solved the
problem by having the infra-red “eye” on a three foot bit of cable which
you bring out from wall and aim at. (see uploaded pic – AMG taught me how to do that as well)

Well no more free Lime Sockets but on e-bay there are at least ten available to
buy in “power and plug adaptors”, obviously some MP’s selling their free allocation.

I have one of these systems that turns my TV and stereo system off from stand-by using my TV remote. The sensor is poking out from my bookshelf under my TV. Shame they are not freely available anymore, maybe the offer will be repeated in the future – we will keep ’em peeled and post any info ( the money saving expert website usually includes details of things like this and has a weekly e-newsletter you can sign up for)

I could have sworn I replied to this. I must be losing my marbles (as opposed to just my muscles…).

Thanks for the information, Taungfox. It’s a shame they’ve withdrawn the Lime version, as those would be far easier to deal with.

I took a look on the Asda website and they still sell the standby remote sockets. I’m planning on getting a multi socket strip version though as I want it for my computer and all the odds and sods that entails. I swear the electrical leads just multiply behind my desk. Maybe they’re like coat hangers in an empty wardrobe. :D
