    pip and carers allowance

If someone was getting carers allowance and income support and then was awarded DLA now PIP would they still get the carers allowance. I would assume the Income support would go but could a disabled person still claim for caring for their person.

The Carer’s Allowance can still be paid to someone who fits the criteria [ie caring for 35+ hours a week for someone receiving DLA Care Comp mid or higher], even if they themselves have been awarded DLA [not sure with PIP, I am not conversant with it’s nuances].

The CA would be deducted from the Income Support, however, the Income Support would add a carer’s premium to the award.

It’s something like this basic IS + carer premium + disability premiums = maximum income – Carer’s Allowance – any other income = amount received.

But that is a very very basic interpretation of the rules.

Forgot to add, DLA as a benefit amount is not deducted as a income, but it does act as a bench mark for what premiums may be awarded.

Cor blast that was a test for the old noggin, been years since I did my Income Support training.

If in doubt ask the wonderous folk at Citizen’s Advice
