Greetings.
I’m relatively new at this, but was wondering if anyone else out there could provide me with some much needed guidance. Currently in the process of being migrated from Incapacity Benefit to ESA and am dreading the Work Capability Assessment.
I have Minicore Myopathy, classic form, which is a congenital form of muscular dystrophy. This disorder severely compromises the mitochondria in the cells, which produce the energy necessary for a body to perform all of its functions (movement, breathing, digestion, cognitive functioning, etc.). Consequently, my physical strength is quite limited, my mobility is restricted, and I experience debilitating sequelae, including severe scoliosis, reduced lung capacity, and dilated cardiomyopathy, as well as chronic pain and fatigue. Because my daily energy reserve is extremely low compared to the healthy adult, I also experience other symptoms when I am forced to expend more energy than I have available (during times of illness, stress, increased pain, or simply an extended period without rest). These symptoms include increased breathing and mobility impairment, difficulty focusing my eyesight, cognitive confusion, nausea, and sometimes psychotic symptoms (symptoms similar to severe and prolonged sleep deprivation in the healthy adult). Subsequently, it is vital that I manage my energy reserve on a daily basis by limiting all physical and cognitive demands, maintaining a high calorie intake, and ensuring that I always have access to a place of rest. If access to these resources becomes restricted for any reason, I can quickly become quite physically ill
Due to the aforementioned condition it precludes me from working a full-time 9 to 5, 5 days a week. I would be much obliged if someone out there could assist me?
Thanks.

The reason I ask is you may not have to attend one, but if you do the MD Campaign have an advocacy service who could possibly help or advise
The advocacy service is free of charge so if you are struggling to get the care and support you are entitled to, please contact us on 020 7803 4800. Alternatively, you can send us an email at info@muscular-dystrophy.org.
August 17, 2013 at 12:41 pm #90619Re: Migration from Incapacity Benefit to Employment and SuppI currently haven’t been asked to attend a WCA, but am hoping this is because my condition speaks for itself and a WCA is not necessary. It has only been a week since I returned the form so appreciate it could take a while to process. Is anyone else presently going through the ESA “system”? I would greatly appreciate hearing a plethora of experiences.

August 18, 2013 at 1:28 pm #90622Re: Migration from Incapacity Benefit to Employment and SuppI was placed into the Support Grpup when I was migrated last May. They initially telephoned me to ask what needed to be in lace to attend a medical when I said need to check when carer has estate car available, need disabled parking, carer needs to push, building must hace wheelchair access and lift, they just sent a form.
About to complete form again for review, hopefully I won’t have to attend this time either.

I know this may be stating the obvious a little, but have you called the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign at all? They have a free helpline that you can call to get all the info that you need – http://www.muscular-dystrophy.org/how_we_help_you/care_and_support
I really hope you get some answers soon…
All the best,

I contacted the MD Campaign and they said they’d assign me an advocate if I needed one. So that’s reassuring. I am amazed at how many weeks they said the process will last end of November apparently.
