Low gear bikes

My 10 year old son has recently been diagnosed with MD. He lives in St Ives Cambridge and has been advised not to use a scooter, but to try a low gear bike. Any suggestions, advice or help would be much appreciated. He has been to a centre in Milton and Peterborough and been on a trike with his Dad, but cannot find anything suitable for just himself.
