Charity Drive and Awareness Event 2013
My name is Craig Walter and I have been suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy since birth. I currently have a tracheotomy and require 24 hour ventilation, but this does not prevent from lead a full and fulfilling life. Since leaving university I have been unable to get a suitable job due to my illness, so I have decided to give something back to society by others means.
I am going to embark on a fund-raising drive with two carers to raise money for Martin House Children’s Hospice and MD campaign in 2013. I am planning to visit 4 points around the UK which are John O’Groats, Aberystwyth, Lands End and Great Yarmouth. This is not only a fund-raising drive, but I also intend to end the trip at 10 Downing Street and explain how care for Muscular Dystrophy varies depending upon where you live. I want to tell the prime minister that this is both unfair and unacceptable.
I would like to collect stories from people suffering with Muscular Dystrophy and there families regarding the lives people with MD lead and the quality of care they receive in their local area. I will give the stories to the Prime Minister along with statistical informatin to prove the need for specialist centres for MD. As an extra personal challenge I intend to drive my wheelchair the equivalent distance of a half marathon during the ten days of my fund-raising drive.
