Can people in WCs take part in a marathon?

I’d love to participate in a marathon/run of some kind for the MDC but I cannot walk at all. Can I participate being a full time electric wheelchair user? Or would that be cheating?

I cannot see for reasons for not, as a ‘fun runner’, but it may depend on the terrain and what the promoters/organisers think. I don’t know if there would be a public liability insurance issue .. good question!

There’s no laws against it as far as I’m aware. A friend of mine recently did a 5k (or 10k, I can’t remember) run in a motorised wheelchair.

I suppose it’s down to the organisers – the terrain might not be suited to wheelchair use. So the best bet would be to pick a marathon or run that suits.

I mean, isn’t there a wheelchair event in the London Marathon? I know that’s usually non-powered wheelchairs (I’m sorry, I don’t know the correct term for them?) whereby the wheelchair users propel themselves along by the wheel rims, but I can’t see why a powered wheelchair can’t do it too!

Good luck finding somewhere that will allow it! I’m sure it won’t be too difficult :)
