BBQs, fundraising, Bertie 23 and next weekend

I had my first BBQ of the year at the weekend (sausages!) but while I was doing it I was checking our Twitter and Facebook on my phone and it was a really cracking weekend for fundraising:

Zoe Randall had a film night at Cardiff SU

Tom arrived in Beijing for a trek

And the Bertie 23 team cycled the whole length of the country (they’re still at it – it’s 1,000 miles)

What I think makes all this fundraising so good is the passion of the people doing it and why they fundraise:

Tom is aiming to raise £7,000 by trekking the Great Wall of China in memory of his younger brother, Ben, who died in May this year. Ben had Duchenne muscular dystrophy. http://www.justgiving.com/Tom-Wright1

Bertie, who the Bertie 23 team are named for, also had Duchenne muscular dystrophy and it is now a year since he passed away. Nick and the team paid tribute to him today with a shot Jagermeister and minutes silence, presumably while on the road for the Lands end To John O Groats cycle http://twitter.com/#!/nickizzle/statuses/57358462031638529

I was really pleased to see all this going on while I had my BBQ, and I’ll be taking some of that inspiration with me to do some proper cheering and tweeting at the London Marathon on Sunday (I’ll be at Embankment). If you have any great fundraising stories to share please add them to the thread and if you are ever doing any fundraising and want a shout out on Facbook or Twitter, we’d love to do that. Just get in touch with me or Dan (Melbye, our Online Manager)

You can see what we’re up to on Marathon day by following the events teams twitter, which I shall be helping out with on Sunday http://twitter.com/#!/EventsMD

Sounds like a lot of inspirational people working hard to honour those close to them, and help raise money for a great cause. It’s amazing how a persons perspective can change when confronted with something so tough. I hope Tom raised the £7,000 from his Trek, and that team Bertie 23 also had a successful fundraiser.

My friends and I have competed in the Oxfam 40 hour work to help raise money to help fight poverty. I guess I can only be thankful that my fundraising efforts haven’t needed to be for anyone close to me.

Fantastic story. It puts a smile on my face to know there are people like this in the world. I have fsh, and my cousin Daniel had duchenne. He was older than me and he died when he was 11, I was about 6. I’m 31 now. I don’t remember much about him other than being protective of him. It is hard for the families of children with duchenne. I have always been close to my aunt Sue. She is a very strong minded woman. She would be very happy to hear about Tom and The Bertie 23. They really are an inspiration, as I sit here I feel I don’t do enough for something, whether I like it or not, I am part of. I would like to both thank and congratulate them for what they have done. And to all of you for giving me something to think about ?.

    Have a Perfect Day
