    Alert/ID Bracelet / weight issues

    Hi,

I was diagnosed with BMD when I was around 3 years old, I think it’s in a mild form as I’m generally able to do pretty much everything. However, these last few months things seem to be getting a little worse. My left hip/groin area hurts when I walk, I have developed Plantar Fasciitis which means every morning I stumble and fall trying to walk, after a good walk around I’m fine again. I’ve also noticed any type of hill walking is almost impossible without getting pains in my legs and lower back.

I’m worried things are getting worse and it’s time I actually took what I have a little more seriously, i’m looking at getting an Alert/ID Bracelet of sorts but unsure what to engrave on it, I suppose the most important thing would be about the Anesthesia warning but there doesn’t seem to be much room. Having just ‘BMD’ wouldn’t be enough due to the lack of knowledge with the doctors.

I’ve noticed there isn’t a search function currently so excuse me if this has been asked before.

I’m currently really over weight (5ft6 / 18st6lbs) and unsure what form of exercise I should try and take to lose some weight that won’t hurt the minute after I start! I guess swimming is my only option?

    Thanks,

    Michael

I have mentioned before on this forum about advising doctors about my condition. When i mentioned to one, as I lay dying on a trolley, that I had MD, his reply was “Whats that?” at which point I asked my wife to take me elsewhere. The moral of the story is whatever you choose do not use abbreviation, put down the whole words. I have my conditions written on the back of my identity bracelet, which is silver, and has my name on too. I felt that the Alert bracelets were rather expensive.
With regard to you other problems wher you indicate things might be getting worse. I would strongly advise a conversation with your doctor who will be able to point you in the correct direction. perhaps it is for physio or some weight loss program. Certainly anyone with pains like you indicate would benefit from weight reduction in a guided way, as most of us are not as trim as the medical establishment would like us to be. There is also of course the risk of type 2 diabetes if you are overweight, and that is of course a serious consequence.
I would re iterate that a conversation with your GP must be your very first step, but it is also good that you are trying to deal with the problem at this early stage before it gets out of hand.

    Hi Michael,

Are you aware that MDUK have produced a number of alert cards? Here is the link to info on the BMD alert card

    Emergency Info

Post from earlier with useful info.

My alert disc has a lot of info on space the size of a 50p.

    Says something like.

Neuro muscular condition. Caution with anesthetics and penicilan.

Also carry a more up to date card. Highlighting ventilated and full condition title and contact numbers.

I perhaps should have added that there exists an alert card designed to fit into a car tax disk holder that alerts emergency personnel if you are every involved in a road traffic collision. Useful to have if they could not get to your bracelet.
